I had slept through the whole journey, so I woke up unsure of where we were. (The joys of tour buses!) I rolled out of my bunk and prepared for the day. Brian hadn't mentioned the money the night before, and I was half hoping he wouldn't today.
As was always necessary on the first day of being somewhere new, Brian and I left the others behind and headed out into the chill to see what was around us in Cardiff. We'd been to the city a few times now, both together and separately, but every time we visted the same towns we seemed to find something new. This time we stumbled upon a cute little bakery selling vegan cupcakes that looked mouth-wateringly good. Neither of us were actually vegan, but it looked so good we decided to go in anyway.
Sat across from each other, drinking coffee as we picked apart banoffee muffins, I felt at peace. This, I decided, was how my life was supposed to look. Chilled out mornings with the one person who I wanted to see no matter what kind of mood I was in.
"You're staring at me," Brian remarked, bringing me out of my thoughts.
"Sorry,"
"It's fine. What were you thinking about?" he asked, genuine interest filling his voice.
"Nothing, really..." I trailed off.
"No, go on, tell me!" he encouraged.
"I was just thinking... I'm glad to be here. With you," I carefully adapted my previous train of thought. Brian grinned.
"I'm glad to be here too. This is going to be fun,"
A week on the road with him. Yeah, I thought, it really will be fun.
"Last night seemed like a good crowd," I remarked.
He nodded.
"Did you get mobbed by crazed fans out there on your own?"
"No,"
He seemed suprised, tilting his head.
"Are you suddenly totally unrecogniseable out of drag or something?"
"I just stayed out of the lights,"
"Why?"
"I just... Wanted to see what it was like on the other side of the stage, you know? Its been forever since I've done that,"
"Can't let the fame get to your head too much, I suppose," he joked.
"Obviously," I retorted, and at this point normally I would do a fan thwoorp, but unfortunately when in boy clothes I didn't carry my fan. Sometimes I felt a little naked without it, in all honesty.
The mid-morning sun was making an attempt at appearing through the cloudy sky, but the twinkling lights on the tastefully decorated tree in the corner of the bakery café seemed to give off more light. The world felt ready for Christmas, but it seemed a so far away to me, something to deal with when I got back to America. Unfortunately, the glitter and excessive Capitalism were unavoidable, so some time soon I was going to have to join everyone else in counting down the days to go, but for now I was counting days for a whole other reason.
