I knew something was wrong. Jethro, Tony, and Dorney's mom had gone to Iraq to get the Harris kid that was tied to The Calling.

It was the middle of the day, and I was sitting at my desk in the office, when all of a sudden I got this gut feeling that something had happened to one of them.

I ran to Vance's office, frantic and upset. Not bothering to tell the secretary that I was there to see the director, I burst into his office, almost in tears.

"Mae, what's wrong?"

"Something happened. I can feel it. Something happened to one of them."

Trying to get any of the three on the phone was near impossible at the time. Vance tried to calm me down, but in the haze of trying to reach the team, and my pregnancy hormones, I was near inconsolable.

When McGee finally got Tony on the phone, everyone was worriedly waiting for word on what happened.

"Tim, what happened to him?"

"How'd you know- oh, right. He was shot. Point blank. One to the knee, one to the chest."

Gasping, I collapsed to my knees. I barely heard what was being said over my tears. If I couldn't be consoled by the director earlier, now, what anyone said wouldn't do anything.

After I wore myself out crying over that, I said, "I need to go. I need to go to Iraq."

"DiNozzo got him to a carrier. He's going into surgery," McGee told me.

"Mae, do you think that's the best idea? You're pregnant-" Ducky tried.

"I'm early in the first trimester with our second child. I know how my body is with a pregnancy. I'll be fine. I need to be with my husband right now."

Everyone was looking at me expectantly, until Vance finally broke the silence. "Go home, get a bag together. I'll have you out as soon as I can."

"Abby, I'll bring Nevaeh in. I want you to watch her while I'm gone," I told the scientist.

"She'll be in good hands, Mae. Go be with your man," she said with a hug.

Knowing I could get my way out of a ticket, I sped home and grabbed my go bag, and threw a bag together for my daughter.

"Auntie Abby is going to watch you for a while, baby. I have to go away for work," I said to the little girl as I got her into her car seat.

"Ok, mama," she said simply. I loved her innocence, even with both of her parents federal agents.

~fast forward to Mae on the carrier, Jethro in recovery~

I was at his side when he woke up. "Jethro, my love."

"Mae. You were in DC."

"When I heard, I flew out."

"Nevaeh..."

"With Abby, Jethro. Jimmy and Breena will help her if she needs it." Taking his hand, I held it close and sighed, relieved that he was ok. The knee that was shot out had to be replaced, and he had a big incision down his chest. Nothing my home remedies wouldn't help with once he was all healed.

All of a sudden, Jethro started laughing. "Babe?"

"I'm going to have a limp. DiNozzo will complain about the bengay again. I'll be out for months."

I chuckled. "Well, between having Nevaeh, having my ankle shattered in that chase a couple years ago, and now this, we're one dysfunction family, my love. At least when it comes to time off."
