Her chest seemed to thump roughly due to the beating of her heart. Her eyes were glued to the ever-changing numbers on the clock. Closing her eyes tightly, she waited for midnight to arrive. Finally, she would be 18.
Eighteen. According to her mother, at midnight on your eighteenth birthday, you were assigned a person. Everybody had a person; it's just what happened. After this day, some people never saw their person again. Some people married their person. Some people were assigned strangers; some people were assigned their best friend. But each person assigned had something in common; they were all going to die. Until you found a way to save your person, the day repeated, causing you to relive your eighteenth birthday until that person survived the day. But at midnight, you were supposed to receive information on the person, but her mother was vague, she refused to reveal more than the barest facts.
