Ugh. Definitely a hard one.

I'm gonna do them both since they're different.

A significant thing from my childhood has to be my pet crow named Black Jack (named after Black Beauty, of course).

My father rescued him when he fell out of his nest and our neighbors tried to squash him with a shovel. Turns out, crows make amazing pets! They're clean and affectionate and love to be scratched around the neck. They also have blue eyelids. And they steal things. Black Jack was a pretty big deal to me. I remember him very clearly.

A significant event from my childhood would have to be 9/11. (Does that count?)

We lived close to NYC, and I saw the second tower fall from the ridgeline near my house. I know we weren't near the epicenter, so it sounds cheap, but as a kid, even though I didn't fully understand what was happening, it was the first time I realized we weren't safe. And that people could die horribly and not just grow old. The gravity of it messed me up for awhile.
