Lacey's P.O.V.
I'm so excited about tonight. Tonight is the night that I'm going to tell Grayson I love him. I'm going to tell him at dinner. I can't wait. I've been waiting for some time to tell him. The only reason I haven't told him is I'm afraid of rejection. I remembered what he said a few months ago. He told me that life is full of what ifs and risks. You have to be willing to take them, or you'll never know what might have been.
I just hope tonight comes soon. It's kind of hard to keep how you feel about someone all bottled up inside. I almost told him over the phone. Luckily I refrained myself. That's not exactly something you want to say over the phone for the first time.
The door opens and I lol up to see Grayson walking in.
"Hey. You're home early."
"Hey."
He doesn't sound too happy. "What's wrong?"
"Huh?"
"When you said hey, you sounded upset. What's wrong?"
"I had a sort of self realization today."
That's weird. "What about?"
"You."
"What about me?" I'm starting to get nervous.
"You deserve better."
"Excuse me?"
"You deserve better. You deserve someone who can give you everything you need and want. That's not me."
"What the hell are you talking about?"
"I'm talking about the fact that I'm not good enough for you."
"That's ridiculous."
"No, it's not. It's the truth. I don't have a stable job. I work part time at the label, and the rest of the time I ay with my band. That's not exactly an ideal job."
"But you live what you do. Isn't that enough?"
"For you, nothing is ever going to be enough."
"Do what?"
"You deserve the damn moon. I can't give that to you. You need to find somebody who can give you that and more."
What the hell did this 'friend' say to him? "I don't want the damn moon. I want somebody to love me for me, and somebody I can love back."
"That's not me."
I feel like I just got slapped. He doesn't love me? "So what are you saying?"
"I'm saying that we can't get married. I'll never be able to give you what you deserve. I wish I could, but I can't."
"Fine!" I take the ring off my finger and throw it at him. "I hope you're happy."
I grab my keys off the hook and run outside to my car. I can't believe that just happened.
I don't even pay attention to to where I'm going. I stop the car, and only then do I realize that I drive to Cynthia's and Jeremy's. It's a good thing Janie and Daniel agreed to watch Kaylie tonight for me. I don't want her to see me like this.
I quickly get out of my cat and run up to the front door. I don't even run the doorbell. I just walk straight through the door. Cynthia walks in the living room out of the kitchen.
"Lacey, honey, what's wrong?"
I begin to cry. "Grayson."
"What happened?"
"He doesn't want to marry me anymore."
"What? Why?"
"He had some sort of realization today. He said I deserve better and that he doesn't love me. What am I going to do, Cynthia? He told me to find someone who I can love and who can love me back. I can't do that."
"I don't know what to say, sweetie. Is there a thing you need me to do for you?"
"I just need a friend. I honestly don't know how I'm going to survive. I thought things were going great for us. The wedding was set for eight weeks from today. He seemed really excited. I guess I just misjudged him."
"Lacey, you did not misjudge him. I see the way he looks at you. I know he's as in love with you as you are with him."
"Then why did he break it off with me? Why sings acting like what we shared wasn't special?"
"I wish I had the answers, honey. Sometimes men don't always junk about what they're saying. They just say things because they're scared. They're scared of getting hurt."
"Well, I hope he's happy. Not only did he break my heart, he stole it. There's no way I can move on from him. Sure I've had boyfriends, but none of them are anything close to Grayson."
"I know. You'll get through this, though. You're strong. I know you can get past this. It'll just take some time. You do know that if you need anything at all, I'm here for you, right?"
"Yeah. Thanks."
"You're welcome, sweetie."
I spend the rest of the day sitting on the couch. I really didn't feel up to doing anything. When Jeremy came in, he automatic asked me what was wrong when he saw my sour mood.
I explained to him everything that I told Cynthia. He's actually interested in what I'm feeling for once. It feels nice to be back to our old selves.
I'm headed upstairs to go to bed when my phone beeps, signaling that I have a text. I check to see who it was. It was Grayson. I don't check to see what he said. I may be madly in love with him, but he broke my heart. He was acting just like everybody. Thinking he knows what I need.
I'm so sick and tired of being treated like a damn princess. I can make my own f**king decisions. I don't need someone to cater to my every need. I just need to be loved. I thought I had that with Grayson. I guess I was just hoping he felt the same way about me.
As I make my up the stairs, I think about all the good times I shared with Grayson. I can't help but smile. They were the best days of my life. Except for when I officially adopted Kaylie. That day was honestly the best thing that's happened to me since my parents died. I just can't believe that Kevin was so willing to give up his rights as her dad. That's one hundred percent the worst part of the whole ordeal.
Laying down on the bed, I close my eyes. I fall into a deep sleep. Hopefully one that lasts forever.
