Sarah emerged, gasping, from under the water. With a shudder she realized she was in the sea. She had no idea how deep it was. After being sucked under the water from the large pool near the rivers, she had been furiously turned and jostled about for a few seconds under water, then suddenly everything was fine.
Now here she was, alone in the middle of the sea-but was she alone? Sarah looked all around and saw a brown head bobbing in the distance. "It might be Sofia!" Sarah thought happily and started to swim over to her. Luckily the sea was calm.
"Sofia!" she cried. Sofia turned and swum to meet her. The 2 girls hugged for a moment before Sofia said shakily, "I never thought I'd be so keen to get back to Spanish."
"Let's find land first," Sarah replied. "I think I can see an island over there."
About halfway there Sofia looked over her shoulder and saw something which made her feel a bit uneasy. She decided not to tell Sarah. It was probably only a group of people having a nice ride in the water after all. But in that case why were they wearing such exquisite clothes?
Sofia then got suspicious that they were following them. "um, Sarah," Sofia started, "There are these people behind us in a rowing boat and they seem to be following us. I can't really see them properly at this distance."
Sarah looked back and Sofia didn't like the look in her eyes. "It's Miss Moore with some more teachers. They aren't exactly looking at us very nicely," she said.
Sofia strained her eyes and saw a group of teachers glaring at them and fighting over the oars. They seemed to be picking up speed.
"Why don't they use a speed boat?" Sarah wondered aloud. "It would get them here much quicker."
"Never mind that; we need to hurry! We can probably make it to the island and hide in somewhere before they come," said Sofia.
Sofia and Sarah swam as fast as they could and finally reached the island. It was only a matter of minutes before the teachers would catch up with them.
After what seemed like hours of tripping over twigs, scrambling over sand dunes, crawling through bushes and swinging over branches, they finally sank down on some tree stumps hidden by large bushes and tall trees. Sofia decided to climb the nearest tree to see if she could see anyone.
She was halfway up the tree when she saw them. A gang of 5 teachers, Miss Moore among them, pulling up their boat on the sand. "Sarah," she called in a low voice, "the teachers are on the island. They just pulled up their boat."
The girls crawled into a nearby bush. "I wonder how long we'll have to stay here," whispered Sarah anxiously.
"We can camp out if necessary!" replied Sofia. Sarah rolled her eyes but couldn't hide the worried look on her face.
"This is actually pretty freaky," she said. "We're stuck in a weird parallel universe thing that might even be a dream! And Miss Moore is really creepy; I don't even know if she is the real one!"
"What do you mean?" asked Sofia.
"Doesn't matter. The point is, how do we get out of here? Imagining ourselves out clearly hasn't worked."
"I know. But we need to think properly. I think the teachers have gone now- I can't hear them."
They both stopped to listen. There was a strange silence that made Sarah feel slightly uncomfortable.
"I'll go climb the tree just to be sure." Sofia continued.
After carefully climbing the tree, Sofia reported back to Sarah: "I can't see them anywhere. Come on, let's go and explore the island a bit. We should have a bit of fun before going back to school!"
Sarah reluctantly agreed. After walking for about 10 minutes they came up to an area where a thick clump of bushes stood, blocking the other side from view.
"This might make a brilliant hiding spot! We should see what is on the other side," said Sarah.
"Ok," agreed Sofia.
They were crawling through the bushes when Sarah screamed. Sofia jumped up immediately and her heart missed a beat. There, standing in front of her, was Miss Moore, her sparkly swimming costume reflecting the light.
Sofia grabbed Sarah and they both tried to escape but Miss Moore hung onto them. "Sofia and Sarah, what do you think you are doing?"
Sofia looked desperately at Sarah who clasped her hand tightly and shut her eyes. Sofia did the same. Then there was nothing.
