The bell rang, signaling the end of another uneventful day. I walked to my locker with a pile of books in my arms and a bag slung over my shoulder. I'd decided to challenge myself this year..so I took all the most challenging classes available. I didn't regret it, but there was rarely a time when I wasn't working on something to do with my studies. I was starting to send in my college applications too. I was determined to get into my dream school, Juliard. The piano was my passion. I just had to keep working hard in school, and hopefully I'd get in.
I set my books on the floor by my locker and started my combination. I just opened my locker when I felt a pair of hands on my face, covering my eyes. "Guess who.." Said a deep voice. I rolled my eyes and pushed the hands off my face.
"I hate to burst your bubble, Axcel, but it doesn't matter how many creepy voices you can make..you do this to me everyday. I'm onto you." I said, turning to face him. Axcel was what high school would categorize as 'nerd'. He was a tall and skinny, awkward guy with black-rimmed glasses. He had dark brown eyes and curly brown hair that was cut short. In other's terms, he was a loser. In my terms, he was my best friend.
Axcel looked disappointed at my words. "You could at least pretend to be surprised," he said disdainfully.
I smirked and patted his curly-haired head, which I had to stand on my toes to reach. "Better luck next time, my friend."
"What're you doing after school?" He asked, watching me put away things and take out other things from my locker. Sometimes, he could be like an annoying shadow. I closed my locker and turned to him again. "Going home." I held up the pile of books I was carrying. "Homework."
"Del, you're always doing homework, take a break," he complained. My real name is Delilah, but no one ever called me that anymore. I'd been called Lilah, De, Lil, but Axcel was the only one who called me Del.
"Well homework is probably a better use of my time than playing video games, or whatever you want to do," I retorted.
"Actually, I thought maybe we'd go catch a movie," he said quietly. "Please?" He begged, making a pouty face.
I sighed in exasperation. "What are you, five?"
"In my mind, maybe."
I couldn't help smiling. "Fine, I guess homework can wait for a couple hours."
"Yay! Onward to Middle Earth!"
"Oh..why did I agree to this?" I mumbled. Axcel had made me watch the entire Lord Of The Rings series and to be honest, I loved them. Now that the Hobbit was in theaters, I was excited to see that too. I only grumbled for the effect.
"Oh come on, Del!" He said, "Time to conquer some orcs!"
He took my books for me and I raised my fist in the air. "For the Shire!" I cried dramatically, and we walked out the doors of the school, getting several weird looks from other students.
Axcel had finally gotten his liscense a couple months ago. I still had my permit and a paranoid mother who didn't want me to take my driver's test because she didn't want me to have a liscense. At least she let him drive me around. We went to the little movie theater in town. There were better ones just 30 minutes away in NYC, but my mom didn't want me going into the city 'alone'. She didn't trust a wimp like Axcel to protect me in big, bad New York.
Axcel bought the tickets and I bought the popcorn and drinks. We got seats right up in the front and I looked over to grin at him, taking a handful of popcorn. "Good idea, Ax. I think we both need some time in Middle Earth."
We chattered through the previews and grew quiet when the movie started.
The movie was brilliant, all us LOTR fans could've ever hoped for. But it was about halfway through when my vision started going weird. At first I thought it was the movie itself, but then I knew it wasn't. Things were blurring together and soon, the whole room was spinning. I started to feel panicked and it must've showed on my face, or in my breathing.
"Del? You okay?" Asked Axcel, his worried face blurring in front of mine.
"Yeah..I'm just gonna go out for some air," I mumbled. I stood up, feeling sick to my stomach. I got out of the seats and to the aisle, about to run so I didn't hurl in front of all the good Hobbit fans. I ran up the aisle but didn't make it as far as the exit.
My teeth clenched together and I fell to the ground, my limbs twitching uncontrollably. I heard someone scream and I was just barely aware of Axcel shouting for someone to call an ambulance. Then, everything went dark.
