We headed downstairs.
Mrs. Hathaway was on the couch reading a magazine.
"Mum." Carol said. "We are going out to play baseball at Miranda's."
"Okay. Be safe all of you." Mrs. Hathaway permitted with a smile.
I felt really bad for lying.
"Juliet, come on." Michael dragged me outside. It was cold and covered with clouds completely.
We started walking towards school as fast as possible,
As luck would have it, it started raining heavily. We had no umbrellas.
"We have pretty bad luck." Nancy complained.
"Let us take shelter under this bus stop." Richard finally suggested.
"But, Miranda might need us badly. We cannot stop." I protested.
"Juliet is right." Michael said.
"Totally. But, we will not be able do anything in this rain." Carol explained.
Richard, Nancy and Carol were a bit tired.
So, we had to stop due to reduction in visibility. Everything became blurred. The sky was dark and it all seemed like a nightmare. But through all this, Miranda's face kept haunting the daylight out of me.
We waited......and waited till it was 6 pm. We had to return home. But, how could we? We still hadn't found any traces of Miranda. What explanation would Michael give? And most importantly, how could we relax at home knowing our friend was in danger? Miranda had always been a good friend to me. We were friends since grade school. She was my first BFF. Nancy and I were friends since our fourth grade. Teardrops started forming in my eyes and before I knew it, they rolled down my cheeks.
"Juliet....." Nancy whispered my name.
I wiped my eyes and turned towards her.
"We need to go home. Where will we find her in the dark?" Said Nancy, her face sullen.
"I cannot return home without Miranda. What will I tell mum and dad?" Protested Michael.
" Michael, be reasonable!" Richard spoke up.
Michael gave him a cold, stony glare.
"You do not care for my sister the way I do, Richard. You love her for her beauty, I love her for her." He said.
There was pin drop silence.
Then, Richard said, "You're one to say, Michael. You have never dated anybody. I, however love Miranda a lot and intend to be with her forever."
Michael snorted.
"Yeah, that's right. If you love my sister so much. Why are your eyes continuously observing Carol ?" He asked.
