Shrink joins Adeline with sitting on the ledge looking out the window, by now Adeline has everything memorized: what time people walk past, what they look like, when the city lights turn on, everything, but for some reason, it still intrigued her.
"What are you thinking about?" Shrink asked.
"Kyle. Me. Life."
"Care to explain?"
"I don't want to get into it." Adeline said, wanting to speak up, but still not trusting it.
"Alright," Shrink said, "so, I have something I need to tell you."
"Okay..." Adeline said nervously.
"Well, Dr. Rose and I have been talking... you've taken little bites of crackers, but that's the most food you've gotten in 3 weeks. So, we're going to give you 2 days, and if you haven't at least eaten one meal, we're going to have to give you an NG Tube, and we would have to put it to where you first get a 500 calorie input a day, and then some time later we would set it as 1,000 calories a day."
Adeline started to get nervous, "what exactly is it?"
"The NG tube?"
"Yes."
"An NG tube, or the Nasogastric tube, it is a narrow bore tube passed into the stomach from the nose. It is a nutritional support. It can be a little uncomfortable to have in, but you would get used to it." Shrink explained.
Adeline could feel the tears building up, she couldn't have that... Her anxiety started to raised so high that her heart start pounding so hard she could feel it on her chest, her breathing shallow.
"Adeline, take deep breaths." Shrink said, setting his hand on her shoulder.
Adeline tried, but her breathing getting worse, her chest hurting from how hard her heart was beating... Everything around her went black, her body going limp, but shaking rapidly, she couldn't seem to control herself. After what seemed like not very long, Adeline woke up on the floor, by her bed, Shrink sitting next to her with a pillows and blankets covering corners near her. Airline's heart still beating quick, her breathing still heavy but shallow. Shrink helped her up and layed her in her bed, turning off the lights and letting her rest; she felt exhausted, her body felt exhausted, everything about her felt exhausted. Her eyes closing again, as she entered the world she loved, even if it consisted of nightmares, it was better than the life she was living in the real world.
Waking up just a few hours later, Adeline sat up, it felt like something was pounding against her skin. She put her hand up against her head and closed her eyes. Groaning slightly, she finally opened her eyes, squinting because everything hurt. Remembering the conversation with Shrink, she closed her eyes again, processing it all. How could they do that to her? Forcing her to do things, it's unbelievable, she shouldn't be forced to do anything... but since her parents probably agreed to it, she has to do it, without even bothering to get her opinion. Adeline got out of bed slowly, walking over to the bathroom, she stared at herself in the horrible looking mirror, "okay Adeline," she whispered to herself, "you have to eat one meal, that's it, then no stupid tube. You can do this."
Determined to eat that one meal, Adeline waited for them to call for the next meal, dinner; the bigger meal. Pacing around her room, counting every tile, she was getting angry at how long it was taking; not even bothering to look at the time, she continued to do her own thing. When the familiar beeping sound of the over-head speaker came on, Adeline jumped up, headed out the door, and to the dining area, sitting in the farthest corner away from everyone.
