We ate lunch I complete silence. Harry ordered for me, not giving me a chance to ask the waitress for what I wanted. Surprisingly, Harry ordered exactly what I wanted, and I mentally praised him.
I didn’t offer to pay my share of the bill, since I didn’t want to be here in the first place, and he told me to keep my bitchiness to a minimum so I did by keeping my mouth shut.
Once we were back in the car I heard my phone ringing, but once I found it in my bag it was too late, they’d already hung up. Checking my missed calls list I saw it was Eva, and I had two others from Oliver. They were probably just making sure I was ok and hadn’t been kidnapped by this psycho.
“Layla!” Harry shouted my name, pulling me from my thoughts for what would be the second time today.
I looked to him, eyes wide as I could not find the words to say to respond. I’ll admit it did scare me when he shouted; it made me feel vulnerable and somewhat unsafe.
“Damn, do you ever listen?” He asked, humour evident in his voice.
“Sorry, I’ve just had a few missed calls.” I responded, not letting on any more. I’m sure he wouldn’t divulge into his missed calls list if I asked him.
“From your brother? I’ve had about 20 death threats from him already.”
“Really?” I asked, thinking Oliver would not even want to text Harry.
“Yeah, apparently if I lay a finger on you out of line then ‘there will be hell to pay.’” He air-quoted. Chuckling lightly he dropped his phone into the compartment between our seats.
“Anyway, I said are you ok just going to the park for a bit. Like I said, what I have planned can’t start until later tonight so we have a bit of time to kill.” He finished.
“Are you going to tell me where we’re going?” I asked, desperately curious to find out where he was taking me.
“I’m not fucking stupid Layla, why would I give away the surprise?” He smirked. Turning the key in the ignition he started the engine and pulled out of the car park. Driving in silence, but with the radio on this time, we arrived at the park in a little over 15 minutes.
Jumping out the car and slamming the door behind him, Harry started walking through the small woods by himself. I took in a deep breath and opened the door, hopping out myself.
I hadn’t been on many dates in the past, was this even a date? Anyway, I’ve only ever been on one other real date. His name was Dylan and I thought he was such a gentleman. Firstly, he got on well with my brother what with the small age gap so there was no tension there, and he did all the small but noticeable things, such as pull my chair out at dinner and open my door for me. Of course, I hadn’t expected these things with Harry; I would’ve been stupid to have.
I felt guilty leaving Harry’s car unlocked, but looking around the rest of the parking spaces, I realised that this place was deserted. Other than an old man walking his dog, there didn’t seem to be any other threats around here. Besides, there didn’t look like there was anything of value stored in his car, other than the car itself.
Hearing the twigs snack under my footsteps, I quickened my pace, trying to catch up with Harry. If I didn’t know any better I would’ve thought that he was trying to get away from me.
Once I caught up to him, I stayed a few paces behind after realising he was on the phone.
“What do you mean you didn’t finish it? What the hell am I supposed to do about him now? Maybe I should just come over there and kick your fucking stupid arse for-“
Harry immediately shut up as another twig snapped under my foot, shit. He took the phone away from his ear, ending it without another word to whoever was on the other end of the call.
“Layla, did you hear any of that?” He asked, his eyes darkening by the second and his voice not faltering.
“No.” I answered back hesitantly, what was I supposed to say? What did he want me to say?
“Be honest or I’ll have to snap your fucking neck right here, right now.” He spat, and I automatically took a step backwards at his harsh, graphic words. Would he really hurt me? A small part of me believed he would, why wouldn’t he? He had this whole façade to keep up, I shouldn’t be any exception.
“Only the part about someone being a stupid arse.” I recollected, not telling him all I had heard, giving myself a slight upper hand. Oh who am I kidding, no one could ever have the upper hand above Harry. I’ve known him less than 24 hours and even I can tell.
“Fuck.” He cursed, walking past me quickly. At first I thought he was going to slap me, but instead he walked straight past me, retracing the steps we’d both already made. I didn’t follow him, it was as though my feet were planted to the ground and I had no control over them. I watched him walk to all the way back to the car, and he didn’t hesitate once he got there to wait for me. Instead, the car backed out of its space and he sped off. I was left, in a forest by myself. I just got ditched by Harry, and I couldn’t have been more disappointed.
