I ran through the open front door and landed heavy-footed on the driveway. It was already dark out and felt the cold immediately on my bare arms. I instinctively folded my arms to preserve heat and scanned my surroundings for any sight of the ticking time-bomb that just exploded in the dining room.
I spotted the roof of his car peeping over the top of the hedge, and ran down the drive and through the gate to catch him.
I wasn’t sure why I was chasing after Harry, I just felt this urge within me to follow him and ensure he was alright. As cold as it was and as disapproving as my parent’s looks were, I needed him.
It looks like my plan was going really well.
My chest was moving up and down at a fast pace from a mixture of the cold night and the fact that I wasn’t used to running about so much.
Once his car was in full view I squinted in the poor light to see if he was in the driver’s seat, but there was no one. Letting out a breath I didn’t know I was holding I looked down the street, scanning the pavements on both sides of the road for the boy I knew I shouldn’t be searching for. I turned my head to look down the other end of the street, and after a couple of seconds noticed a dark figure sat on the wall outside my house, almost completely by the tall hedge that encased our garden.
“Harry?” I asked, my voice sounding breathless.
They looked up slowly, and I was relieved to find it was Harry.
“Harry.” I spoke again, pressing him to talk.
“Why are you out here?” Sounding a lot harsher than I would’ve expected, I took a small step back from him leaving a good distance between us.
“Well, I mean you ran so I just-“ I began to explain.
“So you just came after me like I’m your little boyfriend that got pissed off with your precious fucking Daddy. Newsflash Layla, I’m not your boyfriend, nor will I ever be anyone’s boyfriend, so I don’t need you to come running out after me like some Disney fucking princess that needs her prince.”
I was speechless, I couldn’t even fathom out what to say to that. A part of me told me to be quiet and not give Harry the satisfaction of tormenting me and taking my words just to twist them. Another part of me told me to slap the shit out of him for being such an arrogant, rude, prick. But all of me was hurt.
“Fucking hell we aren’t even dating and we’re arguing like a pair of fucking twats outside your house.” He cursed, running his hands through his hair and pulling at the ends.
“You’re the one who agreed to dinner Harry, I knew it was doomed from the start.”
“Well excuse me your Royal Highness I didn’t realise you had some fucking higher knowledge than the rest of us.” Harry said sarcastically, looking daggers straight at me.
“Would you get over yourself? For five fucking minutes you could you just lose the bad-man act and talk to me like a civilized human being? I care about you Harry, I don’t see why you can’t see that and talk to me like I’m an equal, not some scum you’d usually converse with on a Friday night.”
“You want to find out what my problem is?” Harry asked, his voice laced with warning.
“Yes.”
“You want to know why I’m pissed off? I’m pissed off because the normal me would’ve punched the shit out of your Dad back in there. The normal me would’ve acted out at something like that. The normal me wouldn’t even stay at a girls house for dinner with her parents!”
He sighed, standing up and placing both his hands in his jean pockets by his sides.
“You don’t make me feel like myself when I’m around you Layla, and that worries me. That worries me because I don’t know who I am with you.”
“Is it a good person you become when you’re around me?” I asked, knowing that the normal Harry was bad enough, surely this one couldn’t be any worse.
“I don’t know yet. I’ll keep you posted.” And then the unexpected happened.
Harry’s hands found themselves at my waist, and his lips on mine. The kiss was rushed, as though this was the last time he’d be seeing me. One of his hands slid itself in the side of my jeans, finding the band of my panties and pulling the elastic, letting it go and hit my skin.
I gasped at this, and his kisses trailed across my mouth, down my jaw and to my neck. Despite the cold weather his lips were hot against my skin, and I buried my hands in his hair, holding his head in place as he nipped and sucked at the skin on my neck.
“I’ve got to go.” He said, standing up straight again, his hands leaving my body. He looked at me as though I was a stranger. Like he’d break me if he held on any longer. “Goodnight.”
And with that he was gone. I watched him sit in the driver’s seat for a moment before started the car. Both of us were clearly confused. I certainly was more so. I couldn’t even talk.
I was speechless.
