She never knew what depression was or how it worked.
Alaska was homeschooled all her life, so she didn't learn what sexual reproduction was until 9th grade biology class.
Because Alaska was homeschooled, she didn't have many friends.
She hardly knew what a friend was.
She had Tyler. He grew up a couple doors down from her. He'd come over and watch her finish her classwork up until the last second of 3:00 p.m. After 3:00 p.m., Alaska would hop away from her beginners Spanish lesson and focus on Tyler. Tyler was her world.
They would play pony and catch lizards all day long. It was a routine they followed, and they liked it.
It wasn't until the eighth grade when Alaska had discovered she had a crush on him.
They were outside in the rain, and all was quiet. No one was walking around them. Just Tyler and Las, and the rain of course.
Tyler was 14 and Las was 13.
"Las, I've got something to tell you. " Tyler said, fidgeting his hand in his pocket.
"What?" Alaska said, peering at Tyler from under her baseball cap. She flipped it backwards.
"I was at school today and I saw something." He rubbed his forehead. Alaska was more than confused, she was concerned.
"What's wrong? What'd you see?" She raised her eyebrows and stopped in front of him. The puddle beneath her feet splashed.
"I saw Deryll Johnson kiss Carlee Klein. Today. Outside." He looked away from Alaska and down at the splashing rain below his feet.
"Kiss? Like how my mom kisses my dad?" Alaska asked, putting her hands on her hips. Keep in mind, this girl has never been taught the ways of love. And she certainly wasn't informed on kissing besides her parents smooching every so often.
"Um... Alaska?" Tyler said, rolling his heel on the gravel sidewalk covered with raindrops. He took a deep breath and looked back up at her.
"What, Tyler, what?" She replied.
Tyler leaned closer to Alaska and pressed his lips onto hers. He lied them there for a good 5 seconds before lifting his head back into the pouring rain.
Alaska was even more confused now. She looked around and touched her mouth. She looked at Tyler's eyes and then his lips, his eyes, then his lips. Eyes, lips, eyes, lips.
"Like that," said Tyler. "But she was making noises while he did it. Carlee was like 'ooh, ahh, baby'."
Alaska was speechless. She couldn't make eye contact with him. Not because she was mad at him for randomly kissing her, but because she was blushing her cheeks to the fires of hell. They were red and hot, and she couldn't help but pull her hands over her face. She didn't recognize this feeling and emotion, but she liked it.
"Alaska, why are you turning red? Did you like that or something? Haha wow. Come on Las, grow up." Tyler lightly punched her on the shoulder and laughed.
She glared at him and motioned him to keep walking. They kept walking in the fading rain. Tyler was talking about the brand new car he wanted, but Alaska couldn't stop thinking about the way Tyler's lips felt on hers.
