"Sam honey? Are you in here?" My mom asks as she knocks on my open bedroom door. I tell her to come in and she opens the door wider to see Ryan and I sitting on my bed.
"Oh. Sorry, Ryan I didn't know you were here." She says awkwardly.
"Ma'am, I'm always here." Ryan pipes in. I laugh. He's totally right. The only time he's not here is when I'm at his house.
My mom laughs a little. "Yes, well. I was just wondering if I could talk to Sam for a few minutes. But don't worry about it, I'll wait for another time." She says awkwardly.
I look down at my hands. I know exactly what she wants to talk about. Everything that happened last night: what went down, where that man is now, and where I went. I don't know if I really want my mother to know where I went last night and I don't have a backup story. Thank God Ryan is here.
I glance at him for help. Call it our best friend telepathy, but he knows exactly what I mean and he comes to the rescue.
"Yeah, sorry momma Taylor, but Sammy and I were just talking about how we're going to a party tonight and we have to get ready or we're going to be more than fashionably late." He says, looking at me for confirmation.
Ugh, he had to bring up the party, now I have to go along with it which means I have to go.
I smile painfully. "Yeah, that's right. We're going to a party at some girls house. She's in our grade. Ryan is making me go even though he knows full well how much I hate parties." I glare at him, sending him a message letting him know how dead he is for pulling this. He just smirks victoriously.
My mom nods her head, her eyes darting between Ryan and I suspiciously. "Alright, well, be safe and make good choices."
I laugh. "Mom, look who you're talking to. I always make good choices."
Well, maybe not always. Deciding to fake date a bad boy was probably not the best decision for example. Or staying the night at his house for that matter.
"It's not you I'm worried about." She says before she tilts her head over to Ryan. He puts his hands up in defence and I laugh. My moms sends me a wink and with that, she's gone.
"Meghan's party? Really?" I shoot at Ryan.
Going to a party full of drunk teenagers was not something I was dying to experience tonight.
"Come on Sam. After everything that's happened these past couple days, you need a good time. Plus, if you went, this would be your first opportunity to flaunt your new bae to the public." He wiggles his eyebrows and I fight the urge to chuck a pillow at him like I do far too often when he acts like this.
Instead I just roll my eyes and stand up. "Well don't just sit there, help me pick out something to wear!"
A wide smile stretches across Ryan's face as he jumps up and runs for my closet. I have a walk in with way too much clothes considering I wear leggings and sweaters 95% of my life.
I casually sit on my bed and reach for my phone, listening to Ryan make random comments to himself about my clothes.
"Too casual. Too frilly. Too revealing! What the fuck Sam why do you have something like this you slut!"
I shake my head and laugh to myself, turning my attention back to my phone. I go to messages and click on my conversation with Riley, typing a new message with a small smirk on my face.
Me: Hey you! So I may or may not be going to Meghan Redner's party tonight ;)
I put my phone down and go to my closet to assist poor Ryan. I swear he is the most indecisive person on the planet. Next to me of course.
"So what's the 411 on fashion?" I ask him leaning against my closet door and looking at him in amusement. He is frantically looking about my room like a deranged squirrel and I can't help but have a little smile playing on my lips.
He turns around to face me and throws his hands up in the air. "It's hopeless! I'll never be able to decide! You have such nice clothes I can't possibly pick something! Damn you Sam!"
I laugh. "Ry, half this stuff I only have because you made me buy it! This is your own fault!"
He turns back around with a huff and resumes looking. "You know what?" He pulls out a cute burgundy skirt that I had honestly forgotten about. "I think we could work with this, I can't believe I didn't think of it before!"
The next five minutes is spent picking out things to go with the skirt. Finally we figured it out. It's about time.
"Great," Ryan exclaims, clapping his hands together. "Now grab your makeup bag and all your other shit and let's go to my house!"
I quickly run to my bathroom and grab my makeup bag and curling wand. I put it all into a big bag along with my clothes, then quickly grab my purse and phone before following Ryan. On the way out my phone lights up and Riley's name comes on the screen showing his message.
Riley: Ah, perfect. I'll be seeing you there then ;)
I shut my phone off and keep walking. A part of me is excited for tonight's events, being a couple in front of other people and friends and stuff. But another part of me is nervous and terrified. Especially after the incident with my dad fresh in my mind. I don't know if I can bring myself to be close and intimate with Riley, I might panic. Last night I was only fine because I was so distraught I wasn't thinking clearly. Now is a whole other story.
The hunt for Ryan's clothes takes 10 times quicker than mine. He simply grabs some dark jeans and a plain white t-shirt. He runs a hand through his hair and styles it with his fingers. It takes about 10 seconds.
"Well. I'm ready. Now you." He says, nodding towards my bag of crap. I wish it only took me 5 minutes to get ready. Lucky duck.
I grab my bag of makeup and go to his mirror. You'd think that I'd let Ryan do my makeup since he should be good at that stuff. Not a chance. Ryan is the most awful makeup artist I've ever met. The only time I'd ever let him do my makeup is if I was going for a Joker kind of look.
Since it is a party, I go beyond my touch of concealer and the swipe of a mascara wand. Way beyond. Ryan watches me intently as I expertly contour my face, give myself some smokey eyes, and wing my liner. Not going to lie, I looked good.
"Dang girl, you look hot." Ryan states. I laugh as I start curling my hair.
Once done, I put on my clothes. The burgundy skirt comes about mid thigh, I have a grey/black sweater shirt that I tucked in at the front, and then I put on black socks that come past my knees. The final touch was a gold necklace that came down to almost my belly button. It was simple, but cute, and at long last, we were ready.
The drive to Meghan's was long, considering she lives in the country. I guess that makes her house a good party location. That way you don't have to worry about noise disturbances. Also her parents were away or something so it's going to be crazy.
We pull up finally and the party is already in full swing. There are people outside and I can hear the music blasting from inside.
Ryan and I walk in together, me with new found confidence. Tonight was going to be good. I was going to try to forget about my issues for one night.
For the first time, I was excited to go to a party.
