BEFORE-

I spent the rest of the night reading the required books for English in my bedroom with my music crooning lowly. No one called Marie and I down for dinner, and by the time I had remembered that it would be a good idea so I could get through the day in the morning, I heard Mom scuttling around down in the kitchen and forwent it.

I settled into bed and fell into a dream filled sleep thinking about the offer that Silas made me.

I dreamt of tiny monsters under my skin. I could feel the inky blackness on my muscles and squeezing my lungs- like needles, their claws drew deep into my body, lighting a fire that I couldn't stop. It hurt as they clawed me from inside out.

I couldn't remember most of the dream when I woke up. I thought about the feeling of something cold under my skin as I picked out clothes for the day- something warm that would stop the shivering even though I knew I would suffer later under the South Carolina heat.

As usual, I was the first one up and quickly claimed the shower before starting on the chores that I hadn't done the night before. I started a load of laundry and cleaned up the mess from Mom and Marie's dinner. I took out the trash, too, just for something to do until Marie finished her shower and let me into the upstairs bathroom.

Back in my bedroom, I packed away my homework and my half read book that I had started re-reading the night before. The first week of school had been mostly revising what they had learned the year before and getting used to the work again, but it was easy for me to catch up even though almost every class handed out some kind of homework. I finished most of it in study hall- my last class of the day.

I thought about maybe bringing another book for lunch time, but I decided against it. The only book that I hadn't read on my bookshelf recently was my hardback full copy of Grimm's Brothers fairy tales, and I really didn't want to walk around with a book that big and all my school supplies.

When Marie was done in the bathroom, I did my hair and covered up the bruise on my cheek with make up.
