I walked the empty slum streets in the cool early morning air. I live kind of far away from school, and I would hate for my drunk father to embarrass me. Who knows what reputation I'd get if everyone knew I was the drunkards daughter? I'd rather walk anyways, it reminds me of the walks my mother used to take me on. She died earlier this year, but its okay, she'd never want me to be sad. Before she died she knew about my acceptance into my new school and made me a special out fit. Unfortunately I'm not wearing it today, I want to save it for Friday. Fridays are the best and I want to look my best. I was wearing a simple white t shirt and some jeans that I've long since grown out of, but all our money goes to food and bills.
But it's better to focus on less depressing things. Today's my first day of kindergarten, at Evan's no less. For those of you who are not from this beautiful country of Mentalia, you probably don't even know what Evan's is. Let alone why it's so important.
You see, about 75 years ago in Mentalia there was a civil war between Humans and Elementals. As well as just between the Elementals; Earth, Fire, and Water. The humans despised the way the Elementals condescended them, which is just cruel they can't help it. There are normal looking Elementals, in fact, as a result of the war every ruler of the separate Provinces look normal...part of the deal.
Every human history book described them as monsters. The people of Earth usually were made of rock, seeming as though they'd had a mud bath. People of Water as cold as ice or in a liquified human form. People of Fire could be made of flame, but usually only had flaming hair, eyes, or limbs. When there was an Air Province they were to be feared too, although they were more like nuns and monks than anything else. Sometimes you can see them, others they're as tangible as the wind, they ended up using this power to end the war, destroying themselves in the process. I never believed there was a need for that, we were all the same. We could've found another way. If the Elementals had bonded together, we...they could have wiped out the entire human race. Just the Airs alone could have finished them off. But my mother always said "Never harm a human". So now we're just left with humans, surrounded by slightly dictating Elementals.
Even though it was decades ago, there still some residual resentment between...well everyone really. But it's better between the Elementals, they have some sort of understanding. You know, being able to manipulate things in ways that humans can't is a really good bonding method. Apparently. Although tensions risen in the Earth province over the kidnapped princess, but the anger is more with the people than the actual parents. The mother has the biggest smile, and even though her daughter isn't with her, it's always present. They're mellow people, and I love it.
So anyways back to Evan's. As a way to unite all the provinces as one, Evan's was created. A kindergarten through high school education system accepting everyone. From hot tempered fire heads, to pristine and precise water weavers. Haha, you like that? Fire heads and Water weavers. I came up with that all by myself. There are even rumors of royals attending.
There's approximately 20 kids in a class, two classes per grade. And I was one of them. I guess I technically count towards the human quota, but in reality I am an elemental too. My mother was the last of the Air race, she married my father, a human and they had me. The very last air Elemental, my mother hypothesized that either my powers will manifest weakly, or very strongly. Obviously there have been half breeds before most of them don't make it past the first year. But never with the extinct race...I'm one huge science project. My powers surfaced when I was four, early but not enough to judge my future. My mom taught me to suppress them and a few defensive moves, but never offensive. She was really adamant about "Never harm a human."
But that doesn't matter I'm so excited! I started running and stopped when my solo trek turned into a roaring river of children.
