"Mrs. Alvarez. We have told you in our previous conversation that your presence was not requested at this time." Ross stated sternly. She stood and placed her hands on the desk. How could she stand under the weight her presence caused?
"Yes, you did. And yes I agreed. But as it seems, you are not handling this strong willed brute as you should. If I'm not mistaken, you are rewarding her," her voice dripped with disdain. She swiped her finger across Ross's desk and rubbed away dust that wasn't there. I've barely known her for five seconds and I already hate her.
"We are well aware of what we are doing, Mrs. Alvarez. We can understand how you could want retribution for Kira's actions, but Derek was in the wrong as well. He has been bullying her all week and also destroyed school property. We can punish Kira," um no thanks. "But Derek will receive equal if not more discipline." I smirked to myself You go Fergie! "If you wish I can do both, but you won't get one without the other-"
"I am well aware of my sons role in this mess," Alvarez snapped. "I am not blind to the affairs of children. I do not want Derek to be punished, nor Kira." She said my name as if it was profanity as she lowered herself into the seat next to mine. "I am here to make a proposition, no different an aim than you."
She spoke politically, using vague words, peppering her voice with both pleasantries and insults, creating an invisible tomb with words to trap you in. It's easy to say that I hate politics. And I hate her, everything about her. From the way she won't relax into the chair to the way she raised her son. I don't want her or her offer.
"No, I do not accept," I said claiming her attention.
She moved her eyebrows into her hairline, and for the first time since she walked into this room, she looked ridiculous. I struggled to smother my smile under her gaze. "Excuse me?" She asked snootily.
"I said no," I stated plainly.
"But you haven't even heard what I've had to say-" she said.
"Correct, but I don't like you. Which means that I cannot respect you, and that means that I cannot respect your words. So excuse me," I picked up the pen from the desk and avoided the flames behind Alvarez's eyes. Why can't I honor, or at least fear royalties? Why must I say stupid things like that, or do stupid things like beat up a prince?
Both Ross and Mrs. Ferguson had proud smiles on their faces, as they had a victory party in their heads.
Just as I drew the K with my ink, Alvarez decided to speak up.
"I don't really care if you don't want to hear it, because I'm about to tell you anyway," I kept writing and tried to block her out by humming. Signing should have been over quickly, but I was never good at cursive.
"My son sent me here with a proposition. No one who he ever challenged Derek has left unscathed, of course he's lost a few times, but he's always been able to do damage. And so when I hear that one of his peers has sent him to the nurses office while, she is sent to the principals, I just had to see her," Alvarez tried to impede me, but I'm unaffected by her sweet words.
"Looks like he just needed to be brought down a peg. You're welcome," I said as I concentrated on the P in Pierce, I liked to make it loopy.
"No Kira, you are misunderstanding. I as a mother and queen of a nation, and Derek as a son and the future king have been searching for a fighting partner for a lack of better words. And even though you are disrespectful, abrasive, disagreeable, and obviously deranged, he has chosen you." Even though she slung nothing but insults, I stilled my pen.
Seeing that she's gotten my attention, she rushed to get out her piece. "He has asked me to go in his stead to offer you the chance to fight against my son. And of course 'This is not volunteer work' or however Rossi put it earlier. You will be paid. My son foolishly believes that you will pose some challenge to him and help enhance his Elemental growth. And in fighting him, you will grow as well."
I set down the pen once again and faced her. I could almost feel Ross's and Mrs. Ferguson's concerned faces, and see the undertone of dominion in Alvarez's. Boy was she wrong.
"What makes your offer any better or different than this on?" I said gesturing to the stack of papers on the desk.
"Well for one thing, the 'protector' job seems trying and tiring. Yes they'll prepare you for it, but why wait? You're ready to fight now. Have you not already proved yourself today?"
I rolled my eyes at her manipulative words and moved on to the next page in the huge stack. "Your words aren't that persuasive to someone who can see right through you. I know you don't like me just as much as I don't like you. If what you just told me was remotely true, you could have simply said no and avoided this awkward confrontation. So, don't tell me what you can offer me, I know what I'll get. The chance to beat Derek over and over again, learn how to use my powers for more than defense and parlor tricks, and money for my services. But that's exactly what I'm getting here. So what are you getting Alvarez? I'm just gonna call you Alvarez. What will you gain? What will you loose?" I said it as if I was bored, but the words and their meanings hit home. Even Ross and Mrs. Ferguson were surprised.
She looked at them for help and they just shrugged...in unison. You know that could get creepy. Alvarez drew away from me, and I continued leafing through the sheets of paper.
"Wow, she is not the little girl I was expecting," I scoffed but she continued. "Kira you are a very interesting girl with an endless possibility of power. And I want to test that power against my son. You are the only air Elemental, imagine how great it will look on Derek when he defeats you." There was a glint in her eye that I didn't like, but it seemed practiced and anticipated.
"How many more pages are there?" I ask Mrs. Ferguson, Ross smiles at me but keeps her eyes on Alvarez.
There's a low rumble coming from Alvarez, and the heat is bumped up about ten more degrees. But who cares? There were probably five more pages between me and a quarter of a million.
"Ugh fine!" Alvarez burst out, somehow managing to slump into her chair violently. Got her. She dug her nails into the shiny black material if her seat and through gritted teeth she said, "I am only agreeing to this, so that I may secure your loyalty."
"Oh the truth. What of my loyalty? Surely you don't mean loyalty to you and yours?" I asked innocently.
"Yes. And if not your loyalty, then to be able to observe your actions, limits, and transformations. But after meeting you, I am regretting the very thought of allowing you to touch my son." She said.
Taking pity on her, I made my voice sincere and said, "Well now that you don't want me to, I really want to. Give me the terms and conditions."
"Heh, I thought you'd never ask," she snapped her fingers and out of a swirl of fire appeared a small stack of papers. "If you sign this, this gives Derek the right to challenge you whenever and wherever. You will have safe words which will immediately terminate the current challenge at that time. It will either be postponed or canceled. That will be between you and him. Each fight will end when either one of you can not fight anymore, or just decides to give up if you need an easy out. The only role I have in this, is strictly observation. Like Dr.- I mean Mrs. Rossi I too am a scientist. So what do you say?" With another swirl of flame a pen appeared too. As if I was making a deal with the devil herself.
"Oh Alvarez. I can see you're trying to sway my opinion of Ross and Mrs. Ferguson, but what you don't know is that I already knew that they were planning on observing too. My mother always told me I was a science project. It was to be expected as soon as I lived pass 12 months. But the important thing you left out, is how I am to terminate this agreement. Do you plan on me fighting him forever? I mean I could but I don't think he'll want to get pumm-"
"Yes, yes, fine. We can add that now," she cut me off. I really hate her. But she snapped and the paper got an inch longer.
"Great I'd be happen to sign then," I said snatching the pen from her hand.
"Wait! What of the city? The humans? Who will help them? Whenever and wherever could interfere with your first, and more important job," said Ross.
"Ross, you're vying. Who's to say I can't do both? This will start now, and that will start when I'm ready, as you said. Until then I have this to help me train outside of those three to four hours. And when the time comes, I could fight Derek when I'm not protecting. It is very unlikely that he will want to fight while I'm working. And if he does...I'll concede and give him the win. I can do both, and I do need the money. Thank you for the offers. I accept them both." I say signing all the documents shoved in my face.
I came to school today a girl late for class. But I'm leaving both a hero and a villain.
