Thankfully instead of putting me "with all the other traitors to the crown" they put me in the hospital ward.
It didn't take them more than thirty minutes to remove the bullet from my back. When I asked them if they'd gotten to the knife, they gave me confused looks. They left me with 800mg of ibuprofen and instructions to stay on my stomach.
The door behind the curtain opened and the think blue curtain was thrown to the side. A small boy dressed in white bowed deeply to whoever walked in, then he left the room.
"Kira?" Hannah said quietly. She was unrecognizable. Her beautifully wild hair had been tamed into perfectly straight rods. Her usually natural looking make up was caked on and dark. And her normal Saturday outfit of an oversized sweatshirt and jean shorts was replaced with with a navy blue gown. It winked in the light from the window and everything.
"I talked to the King and Qu-my parents and sorted everything out. They're very sorry extremely embarrassed about last night and hope you can continue working for them like old times. Your papers have been filled out and you can leave whenever you're ready," she said overly happy.
I rolled my eyes and turned my face into my pillow. A lesson I learned long ago; it's better not to speak to royalty.
"Come one Kira. This isn't fair. It's not like I knew, I didn't lie to you about this. I didn't even know until I tried to deliver that dumb package over spring break." She pulled over a chair and daintily sat down. "If I had known, do you think I'd stayed at the orphanage?" Hannah joked.
"So you would have left without a second thought?" I said venomously.
"No, I-I woul-" Hannah stuttered. It's good to see she's still in there.
"You don't get it do you?" I accused while painfully flopping onto my butt. "All I wanted to do was switch schools, but you almost caused an earthquake to get your way. But now, here you are trying to leave my life completely. What am I supposed to do? I could start a tornado or three, but what would that accomplish? I'm asking you to not become a princess because I'm selfish. But bottom line, I don't want to lose you. So you're wrong. This isn't fair. It isn't fair that you can just uproot yourself from my life and think I'd be happy for you."
"It's cruel, Hannah," I whispered. Tears plopped into my hands.
Hannah gasped softly and got out of her seat. "I thought , you were mad because-"
"Because you're a princess? No! I couldn't care less that you are a princess. But the fact that you are a princess takes you away from me," I sniffled.
"But last night you called me a liar, and selfish, and no better than Alvarez. That hurt Kira," Hanna reached for my hand.
"So what if it hurt," I snapped, snatching my hand away. "I was hurt. I took a bullet for you then your royal guard accused me of being a Mercy agent. That's the same exact stuff Alvarez would pull, so I said it. I didn't have much control over myself, and I also wasn't wrong. I will not apologize."
"You're not mad then?" Hannah asked, hope sparkled in her eyes.
"No, not mad just frustrated, and confused. I went out assuming that you'd come back with me one way or another, but I can't cart you out the castle with me. I always new you were going to do really awesome things some day, I wasn't expecting them to happen so soon." I shook my hands and wiped my splotchy face.
"I'm sorry Kira. All night I'd been preparing for you to be mad, I didn't know you were sad. I'm sorry, I'm sorry," she blubbered. Her dress rustled when climbed in next to me for a hug. "Please don't be sad."
