"Ra...Kira...KIRA!!!" An empty can of Dr. Pepper banged hollowly on the lunch table, forcing me out of my pity party.
The clamor of the loud kids around us attacked my newly sensitive ears. As you can probably expect, without my powers to save me, the thirty foot fall to the ground was not fun. I landed badly on my shoulder, my head immediately following suit and cracking against the hard concrete. Which would explain my splintering headaches I got from time to time...like now.
The peas I'd been absent-mindedly mashing with my fork was nothing more than a yellowish green paste as I turned my attention back to Hannah. "I'm trying to cheer you up, and you're blocking me out!" She yelled harshly.
"I'm sorry," I said, flinching away from her words. "It's just that it's been months since the trials! You already got your letter and I didn't even make it to the end. And honestly, what are the chances that we secured two out of the four spots? I don't know why I'm still talking about this, it's obvious that I failed."
"First of all it hasn't even been two weeks since the trial yet," Hannah said. "Second of all, the letter said the first meeting is the 30th. You have eleven more days to get your letter. Just calm down, and let the letter come to you. If I got in, you definitely got in, with your powers there's no way you didn't."
Oh crap, I forgot to tell her, I thought.
My face must've betrayed me because she immediately said, "What did you do?"
"Well...I didn't exactly...use my powers...per se," I was trying to avoid looking at her, but I couldn't help it. Her big green eyes were the size of softballs and her mouth seemed to have unhinged itself.
She took in a deep breath to start ranting, but I cut her off. "Before you say anything, let me explain myself!" She shut her mouth and then it was my turn to take a deep breath. What could I say that would explain why I did that? It was stupid, I know it was stupid.
"I really wanted to get this job, so I thought that if I did something strange and abnormal I'd get noticed and picked so I thought I should run the course without my powers. I was doing fine until the floor broke, then I fell, as you know. And because they thought I was a regular human, I decided to play it out and let myself fall."
Hannah's face had turned eerily serene. "Kira Marie Antoinette Jacob Pierce Fay!" Hannah started. She threw out so many names (that weren't mine) it was hard to keep track.
"Do you mean you purposely jeopardized our last best friend bonding activity, be you were feeling self conscious?! All this time I was wondering how the hell did you fall through the floor? You can fly for Christ's sake! You're the last person ANYWHERE who can manipulate the air, why wouldn't they want you? Why-What possessed you to make you think that would have been a good idea?" She ranted, banging her hands on the table again. I think she knew I had a head ache today.
"Like you said Hannah, I'm the last of my kind, but no one really knows what that means. I should've died when I turned five because I'm a hybrid, but I'm still here. My powers surfaced when I was two, violently if I may add. And now, I can fucking move water too." I whispered the last part. Hannah's eyes widened again both in shock of this new fact and because I cursed. She's so sweet and delicate that cuss words literally grate against her ears.
"I'm an unpredictable factor, I don't even know what's gonna happen in my future. My whole existence was supposed to be a secret. And now with the war brewing about the missing Earth Princess, anyone who knows about me will try to use me as a tool. My race ended a war, there's no end to what I could do. If I went around everywhere sharing classified information with everyone, I probably won't live to see my 20th birthday. Mentalia is dangerous for me Hannah," I said tears welling in the corners of my eyes.
