The hot air whipped my hair out of its loose ponytail. I spared the lost ponytail holder a brief glance before I skated away from it. Today was the first completely free day I'd had in months, and summer was already over. School starts tomorrow. Nothing can get in the way of me and Fire & Ice.
It felt like just yesterday I was getting buddy buddy with Derek, saving Hannah from Mercy, and almost being thrown in Earth province prison. But in the months between mid April and early August, I've been busy.
Well, no busy is an understatement. The weekend after my little visit to the earth province I didn't move a muscle.
Principal Rossi and Mrs. Ferguson caught wind of my escapades from Derek and came to visit me but not before I made my final decision to leave Evans. They both begged me to stay (Principal Rossi even told me I could call her rose if I stayed), but I guess they could see how tired I was of my current fast paced life. Principal Rossi promised to have all my transfer papers ready by Friday so long as I provide the new school by Thursday.
But the hardest part was going into Evans and seeing the sympathetic looks everyone gave me. I don't know what the story was, but apparently it wasn't good.
When I saw Derek I gave him a weak smile and left the building.
The new school I chose was called Alaska Pines. Extremely dumb name, but everyone in Mentalia knew it was the best human high school around. Unlike every other school Alaska Pines begins in August and not September and there was a grueling six month process to get in. I was about two months late but with my grades, dedication to "volunteer work", and a high recommendation from the principal of the innovative school Evans they allowed me to take the entrance exams.
Oh and a little bit of semi-elementist sympathy got me there.
But anyway I took the exam and passed with flying colors. A thick envelope with test results and an acceptance letter came in a few days later. Out of all the sophomores in APHS I came in second to some kid named Nicholas Collegio (Ko-lah-gee-oh). Not that it really matters because I will beat him soon enough.
The last thing I had to do after getting accepted was quit EPS. On my self appointed last day I walked in with a plan. Get in, quit, get out, apply to Fire & Ice. But when I went to actually enact my plan, the most unexpected thing happened.
Fallon begged me to stay. She said she was really impressed with my flawless deliveries and the extras I took on in Hannah's absence. Somehow she found out I was the one who saved Hannah and said that I was ready to be promoted to special operation delivery. They secretly choose one from every new batch of fall deliver people and it's like the same thing but comes with more pay and more danger. All they'd give me was a package or two and a gun, no uniform, no badge.
Obviously I declined. I wasn't about to reconstruct the rest of my life and leave this monument standing stronger than ever. It just didn't make sense.
But then she pulled out some paper for me to read. I specifically remember not reading it and having her explain what it said.
Apparently the prince of the fire province wrote the EPS corporation and asked them to up my position. He also said that if I was still allowed to walk away he would not only pay me a visit to my "wonderful pent house" he'd also wouldn't need EPS's services anymore.
I had half a mind to march right back to the audience with royalty thing and kick his ass. But Fallon, not knowing what kind of relationship a human and the prince had, forced me to stay.
In the end I agreed after I raised my pay more, got a quarter of it donated to Hannah's old orphanage, and another quarter donated to Evan. Oh, I also got her to beg me on her knees which was a plus.
