It's spring break and months after Hannah and I started working at the Elemental Postal Services.
Surprisingly, the winter was hell. I never thought I'd hate christmas, but there were so many heavy things to carry!
And the thin cardboard they made us wear was not nearly enough to keep us warm. The only winds I could pull towards me we cold ones, so needless to say every trip was on foot. Like the little human I'm supposed to be.
But as soon as the sun came out on my first day of break, I was out on my balcony in a bikini. A glass of lemonade beaded next to me as Bangarang by Skrillex blasted through my headphones. The smell of violets I'd potted by the door filled my nose.
I've been out here for hours, but the sun didn't do anything to tan my pale skin.
Even though it was spring break for every school in the country, Fallon still expected us to come into work. I downed the rest of my drink and went inside to shower before I got sunburned.
I showered quickly and jumped into the new coveralls. I laced up my boots and sent a quick text to Hannah as I clomped down the stairs.
!¥!¥!¥!¥!¥!¥!¥!¥!¥!¥!¥!¥!¥!¥!¥!¥!¥!¥!¥!¥!¥!¥!¥!¥!¥!¥!¥!¥!¥!¥!¥!¥
When I got to the office, I don't know what I was expecting but it wasn't this. The parking lot was completely empty. Devoid of cars, bikes, and any other transportation people use to get here. Even the little purple mo-ped Hannah bought with her salary was missing. Did she get my text?
I guess no one else shared my enthusiasm for getting things out of the way early.
The lights were on inside, so I let myself in and went straight for my cubby.
As I grabbed the mail, my eyes passed over Hannah's cubby. The two foot wide space next to mine was overflowing with mail, it's not that unusual though. She likes to build up her jobs and take them all at once. She's incredibly lazy, but Fallon doesn't mind as long as they all get delivered by the end of the week. I think that's today.
I sifted through her pile and pulled out the things that were addressed to the earth province. This should help.
It took a while to run my course and by the time I got back the sun had set and the lot had filled with cars.
I walked inside for the second time that day and made a beeline for the front desk.
Greta sat in the middle of the circular help desk. Her fingers flew over the keyboard while her eyes never left the computer screen. She'd take a break to look over some paperwork, but she mostly worked on the computer. The way she worked was both mechanical and fascinating. I still have no idea what her job is.
She held up her finger when I approached and continued reading her paper. I folded up my hat and put it in my back pocket as I waited.
When she was finished, she wrote something on the top of her paper and directed her attention to me. "Signing in? It's over there," she said with attitude.
"I know where the sign in is. I already made my deliveries and I need a Delivery Report Form," I said, barely able to contain the bitch in me. A surprised look flashed across her face as she reached under the desk for the form. She handed it to me. I was about to walk away when I remembered something.
"Have you seen Hannah?" I asked. We both glanced at Hannah's cubby. Her eyes softened as she shook her head.
I sat down and filled out the sheet with the monotonous words.
Did you complete all of the deliveries?
Yes.
Were there any damages?
No.
Were there any complaints?
No.
Did you engage in physical combat ?
(I wish...) No.
After I signed my name at the bottom, I went to turn it in. The door opened and Hannah stood in the doorway.
The room stilled and I did a double take when I saw her. She wasn't wearing makeup, her hair was a huge frizzy puff, and she was still wearing her winter uniform. She glared at everyone in the room and dared them to say something.
No one did.
She huffed a sigh and shook her head as she trudged to her cubby. As if they'd been released from a spell, everyone went back to work.
I smirked and crossed my arms over my chest. "You woke up late didn't you?"
Without out a word, she looked at me a sideways. I laughed and passed her one of the hair ties around my wrist.
She opened her bag and shoveled the packages into it carelessly. I winced as they tumbled and banged into each other.
"Ugh!" She grumbled to herself, but I knew she wanted me to respond.
"What?" I asked rolling my eyes in her direction.
"Look!" She said, shoving a red wrapped box in my face. I grabbed it and turned it over in my hands. It was only five pounds, but the red meant that the delivery would take much longer than any normal route. I glanced at the label. It gave all the regular information, who to, who from, where, and how long they expected the delivery to take.
"Seven days!" She complained to the ceiling.
"At least it isn't green wrapped," I said while trying to stifle my smile. If it was green then that meant that it had to be delivered by a certain time. Those sucked cause the recipient isn't legally allowed to accept it a minute late or a minute early. There was no possible way to time it right on the dot, so you just have to leave early and wait around for hours until the delivery time came.
"You only say that because you get these all the time! That's our whole break!"
My "sucks for you" smile fell. That's right, this affects me too. We had so many plans!
"I could go with you," I offered.
"No," Hannah said after a deep breath. "I'll take care of it myself. Time to be a big girl.
I pretended to wipe tears from my eyes.
"Oh shut up," she sneered.
We walked out of the building and rounded the corner to where she parks Barney, her moped.
She straddled the lame purple mobile as it roared to life. She revved it a few times just to annoy me, then she gave me one last fleeting glance before she raced out of the parking lot.
"See ya on Monday!" She yelled.
And I watched Barney's tail lights disappear.
