Link shivered. It had been raining for two weeks straight. Most of the bread that Saria had packed for him had been thrown out--it was too mushy to eat. Navi had taken refuge inside of his hat, trying to get in a little sleep. The effort was fruitless, seeing that Link's hat and hair was fully saturated with water and dripping on her head, drop by freezing drop. The Emerald had sapped all of his strength and he'd not gotten the chance of gaining it back. Link stumbled with exhaustion, a dull ache settling behind his eyes and in his shoulder. The treeless land was beginning to get to him. All plains and farmsteads, no villages or forests or towns. He had no money to pay someone for a room, and had been quickly chased off at any homestead he'd come to beg at. He'd quickly learned that times outside the forest were tough and nobody trusted anybody else. Once, Link had found an overturned wagon that had been robbed of all it's goods. It's driver was dead, but there were no more passengers that Link could see. He'd camped out inside and dried off a little. That only resulted in Navi catching a chill. She couldn't breathe through her nose and could hardly talk. The rain did not help.
Link staggered wearily towards a boulder next to a fast-flowing river and leaned up against it. A loud crack made him nearly jump out of his skin. Lightning struck a rarely seen tree and set it aflame. He huddled against the boulder, taking advantage of the little bit of shelter it offered. The rain drove pebbles and dirt before it, stinging Link's skin. Navi was at his ear, yelling something in her hoarse voice.
"A cave, Link! On the other side of the river!" she shouted, her voice cracking. Link looked over to the other side and squinted into the driving rain. A bright flash of lightning illuminated a cavern entrance in the sheer rock face on the other side of the river, along with a rickety wooden bridge leading to the other side.
"Bridge!" Link shouted, standing and nearly being knocked over by the wind. Rain pelted him like stones, dripping down his nose and chin. He ran across the bridge and fled the rain into the cavern. Navi shuddered with chill and sneezed several times in a row. Link couldn't see a thing inside the cavern, so he curled up where he was at and fell asleep almost instantly. The last thing he remembered thinking before drifting off was that the Stone in his pocket was vibrating.
He awoke some time later to the padding of soft footsteps. He sat up, peering around blearily. His entire body ached with chill and was stiff with last night's rain. His shield had rubbed a hole in the back of his tunic and he had an indent in his neck where his sword had been all night. Something hard hit him in the back of the head and sent him back down on his face. Dazed, he groaned and rubbed the back of his head.
"Oh! Oh, my goodness!" gasped a voice. "I am so very sorry! I didn't think anyone was in here, so you kind of frightened me."
Link shook his head groggily and looked up at the person to whom the voice belonged.
The girl was bright blue, with a strangely shaped head, like a hammer head shark, but not as long and thin. She had tiny fins attached to her shoulders, waist, and the backs of her thighs and wore nothing but a purple bracelet. Her skin looked amphibian, like a salamander, except for a ribbon of fish-scales winding around her chest, waist, and legs. She was extremely boney and had flippers instead of feet. Her lips were a vivid pink color and her eyes matched the color of her bracelet--purple.
