Link opened his eyes to see Saria kneeling beside him, a worried look on her face. She had a wet handkerchief in her hand and was gently dabbing his face with it.
"Link? What happened to you?" she asked him, helping him to sit up. Link grimaced and sucked a couple of breaths in through his teeth. He gingerly felt around his sides and stomach, making sure that everything was still intact.
"Are you alright?" Saria asked him.
"I f-f-feel like a g-g-got hit by a w-w-w-wagon," he said ruefully, rubbing the growing knot on his forehead. Saria pressed her lips together.
"You look like you got hit by a wagon. What in the world happened to you?"
Link shook his head. "L-l-l-long st-story. B-b-but you're n-n-not s-s-safe around m-m-me anymore. You h-h-h-have to go." Link rose to his feet, groaned as pain squeezed his entire torso, and sank to the ground again. Saria took him by the shoulders. He made a soft hissing sound as her fingers touched his injured shoulder.
She pulled away and cried out softly when her hands came off bloody.
"Link, you're bleeding!" She gently pulled his shoulder from his tunic sleeve and bit her lip. "Oh my gosh...what did you do?" Saria squeezed her wet handkerchief over the wound and let water drip into the cut. She cleaned blood and caked dirt and sweat away, talking the entire time.
"I swear, you are the most accident-prone boy in the universe! What did you get yourself into this time?" She brushed ash from his chest. "Fire? And cobwebs? What was it, a fire-breathing spider or something?"
"No. It h-h-h-ad a l-l-l-laser-shooting e-e-e-eye-b-b-ball," Link told her.
"Very funny," Saria snorted flatly.
"No, s-s-s-seriously!" Link insisted.
"I think that knock on the head addled your brain a bit. Spiders don't shoot lasers out of their eyes, silly."
Link looked at her blankly and Saria pursed her lips. "You're not kidding, are you?" Link shook his head.
"Where's Navi?" Lillian asked, flying up with a flask of water for Link's injuries.
"She's n-n-n-not back y-y-y-yet?" Link asked, a worried frown creasing his brow. "I h-h-h-hope s-s-sh-she's alright..."
"I'm here!" called Navi's high pitched voice. "I'm back!" She landed on Link's knee. "Are you okay? You look super pale."
"He just woke up," Saria informed the blue fairy. "He took a nasty knock on the head."
"D-d-d-did you g-g-g-get him?" Link whispered.
"Sure did!" Navi whispered back. "I got him good!"
Link smiled weakly, his lower lip trembling and tears brimming in his bright blue eyes. Things had happened to fast that Link wasn't able to fully grasp the fact that his father, the Great Deku Tree, was dead. Saria helped him to his feet.
