Link opened his eyes. Everything was blurry at first, but things soon came slowly into focus. He was staring up at a sturdy, raftered ceiling made of wood. He couldn't move very well, but he felt a soft, goose-down bed underneath him and a pillow behind his head. The time between his injuries until now had passed like a dream-- or a nightmare. All he remembered was pain and a swirl of voices that he didn't recognize, besides that strange dream he had about dying.
"Where...a-am I?" he asked the ceiling.
"You're at Lon-Lon Ranch, in the home of the Lon-Lon family. Welcome back, Link."
Link turned his head. Beside him was a burly, grizzled man with black hair, frosted white with age. He smiled easily down at him.
"You've been asleep for quite a while, young man. I'm glad to see that you've decided to come back to us. Lenae will be pleased."
"Lenae...? Is s-she okay?"
"She's perfectly fine. She's outside at the river right now: nearly had to drag her down there. She hasn't hardly left your side."
Link smiled weakly.
The doctor placed a hand to Link's forehead. "You're fever's broken. That's a good sign. You shouldn't be going through any more unconscious spells like you have the last couple of weeks."
"Weeks?!" Link exploded.
"Yes, weeks. Almost three if I remember correctly. I thought for a while that you'd gone into a coma."
Link shook his head and closed his eyes. "Is Navi...?"
"In the kitchen with Mrs. Lon-Lon. Navi!" the doctor called. "He's awake."
A blue light burst into the room and tackled Link, kissing him and sobbing and saying things he couldn't understand.
"I'm fine, Navi. I-I-I-I'm g-going to b-b-be okay."
"I'm sorry, Link, I'm sorry," Navi sobbed.
"S-sorry? Sorry f-f-for what?" Link pulled Navi off of him and looked her in her glow, hoping it was her eyes.
"Link...your legs were severely broken in the accident," began the doctor.
"It's m-my legs, isn't it?" Link interrupted. "Somethings w-w-wrong with them."
"No, no, there's nothing wrong..." The doctor drew his hand across his eyes. "Not with you. What you did was very brave. But...as heroic as it was-"
"Just t-tell me a-a-already." Link frowned. He knew that the doctor was wasting time. He also knew what he was going to say.
"Link...your legs were crushed. I don't think you'll ever walk again."
Link bit his lip and nodded. The doctor left him alone with Navi and went to help Mrs. Lon-Lon in the kitchen.
