[Louis]Louis threw the cigarette on the wet pavement and stomped on it, his nerves not calming down the least. He'd thought they were on their way to victory. Surely if there were no families to adopt Zayn, then Simon couldn't force them to give him to someone. And they couldn't give him back to the adoption centre because that would leave a bad mark on the media.
Louis snorted bitterly as he watched the family of four greet Liam who didn't look as enthusiastic to see them as they were to see him. The younger girl squealed and gave him a hug, while the older one smiled embarrassedly and shook his hand. Liam invited them inside.
Louis gave them a fake smile as they passed him, today's weather reflecting his mood. Simon had been furious when the two parents reported that they weren't interested in adopting someone so out of control as little Zayn was. He was too troubled they said. I'll make sure you boys won't be able to do it again, Simon said.
Louis grumbled under his breath as he headed inside. Zayn was greeting the family, his wide eyes still unaware that they were not merely guests. They could end up becoming his next family.
The guests were seated in the living room and Zayn walked over to Louis, a curious look in his face. "Who awe they?"
"They just want to meet you," Louis said and tried to seem unbothered. Zayn rubbed his stomach. "Jayn tummy hungwy."
"Didn't Maria make breakfast for you?"
Zayn shook his head and pointed to the kitchen. "She talking with Niall."
"Okay, go tell them you're hungry. Don't come out until we say so okay?" Louis said gently, his heart hurting. This was horrible, this was going to be horrible.
"Okay, but why?" Zayn asked in a small voice, tilting his head as he tried to figure out why they were all so tense today. "And Jayn want to go to kindewgawden."
"Not today, we have guests," Louis said and walked over the foyer. Zayn followed after, his socketed feet trying to keep up. "But Jayn not be with guests."
"You're not supposed to be with the guests until we tell you," Louis explained pointedly. The three year old scrunched his nose. "But what I shupposhed to do?"
"Eat," Louis suggested and nodded at the kitchen as the hallway opened into the living room. Zayn seemed satisfied with the answer and skipped into the kitchen, his mood as preppy as usual.
"Simon told us Zayn would act out of character, but he guaranteed that he's not like that," the mother said brightly. "You boys have nothing to worry about."
"Of course," Liam said with a faux smile, looking up at Louis helplessly. Louis didn't really want to sit down and chat with the people who would unknowingly be stealing Zayn from him and the boys, but he felt bad for Liam. So being the idiot with his uncontrollable mouth, he sat down beside Liam and greeted the family properly.
"I love your house," one of the girls said sincerely, looking around with a smile. "It's so homey."
Louis would have appreciated the comment if it hadn't been for his shitty mood. "Would you like something to eat or drink?"
He wished they could have sent Zayn to kindergarten. But unfortunately, the stupid couple had ratted out yesterday's events and Simon called them and ordered them not to send Zayn. The boys argued that Simon couldn't decide over Zayn, but the old man was having none of it. Louis decided that as soon as this family went, they would have another hard talk with the bastard. He could control them, but not their family. And Zayn was a part of it.
