Things were pretty good, really. We all got along pretty well as roommates and hung out most evenings, as roommates will. One night when we were surfing channels on the TV, the music video for "Single Ladies" came across the screen. Belv, who (naturally) had control of the remote, kept on changing channels, but I said, "Hey! That's Beyoncé! Go back to that!"
I shouldn't have said anything, I got such a ribbing. Under duress, I finally admitted it. "Okay! Okay! I have a mad crush on Beyoncé! Now leave me alone!"
But Finn wasn't finished yet. He suddenly looked up from his homework at the kitchen table. "Did you know," he said with a glint in his eye," that one of the dancers in that video is a man?"
"What, in the 'Single Ladies' video? Nawwww," I said, vaguely horrified.
"It's true," Finn said, grinning. "It's actually a man."
"Is this true?" I looked around. "Cameron?"
"I dunno," said Cameron, not wanting to get involved.
"Nick?"
"What makes you think I know?" Nick asked in mock indignation."Admit it!" Finn crowed. "You lusted after that butt!"
My jaw dropped. Finn's words hung in the air for about three seconds, and then we all laughed as only roommates can. Belv had tears running down his cheeks.
"Ha ha ha," he finally forced out between laughs. "Ten years from now, when I run into you, that's―he he―that's the first thing I'm gonna say to you! 'Admit it!'―ha ha ha―'you lusted . . . you lusted . . .'" he collapsed in a fit of laughter.
This was a weird apartment, but that night as we talked and laughed I was profoundly grateful to live in a place where no one was out to get me.
