Winds blew harsh across the grassy hills as two little boys with golden blond hair ran up one of the paths to a tree on top of one of the hills. Their mother followed them at a more steady pace, their father walking beside her. The boys laughed as they tagged each other and ran around the tree. The older one, about five, stopped, panting, "Mom, dad! Can we eat here?"
The mother smiled, "Of course, if this is where you want to." The boy nodded eagerly and was soon tackled by his brother who was only a year younger, "Keith, come on!" The younger grinned, "Sorry Nathaniel." Their father reached them and picked them up and they both squeaked, "Alright boys, calm down." He smiled and kissed their heads and they squirmed and laughed. He set them down and they set up for their lunch. Keith sat down, waiting patiently for his sandwich and took it when his mother handed it to him, "Thank you!"
She smiled, "You're very much welcome." She gave out the rest and they ate their lunch. Afterward, the parents spoke quietly to each other seeming a bit concerned as their boys played. Keith tilted his head, "What do you think they're talking about?" Nathaniel shrugged, stretching, "Who knows." He glanced at their parents, a little worried by their concerned expressions, "Maybe its just something about dad's work." He looked at Keith as he spoke again, "Are they maybe talking about that epi... epidemonic?" Nathaniel frowned, "Epi what now? Do you mean epidemic?"
Keith nodded and he sighed, "I don't know." He smiled and tickled him, "Shouldn't worry about it." Keith squealed in laughter and they started messing around again.
Two months passed and it was early morning. Nathaniel yawned, stretching a bit as he wandered down the hallway from his room to the living. He blinked tiredly as he saw his mother standing in the front doorway, "Mom...?"She looked up and turned to look at him, putting on a weak smile, "Morning Nathaniel, sleep well?" Nathaniel frowned, "Sort of... Are you ok?" He watched his mother as she broke down and started crying. Worried, he rushed to her and tried to calm her, "Mom, please tell me..." He looked around, "Where's... Where's dad?" She shook her head and it sank in, "Where did he go?"
His mother hugged him, "He's... Well, he went to work but... But he's not coming back..." Nathaniel froze, "Not... Coming back...? But I don't understand... Why... We went out yesterday and..." He heard Keith's clumsy footsteps in the hall and closed his eyes, "It doesnt make sense. How could he do this?" Keith mumbled, "How could who do what?" He yawned and rubbed his eyes, glancing between them and their mother shook her head.
She took them to sit down on the couch after she had calmed a bit and sat down between them, keeping them both close, "The epidemic that's been going around, its getting much worse. The sickness just keeps spreading and your father left to see what he could do to help." Nathaniel grew confused, "But you said he wouldn't be coming back..." She looked at him, "He wont. I don't know why." Keith mumbled, "I don't get it." Their mother shook her head, "Doesnt matter because I will be here and we will be just fine right here. I promise, for as long as I live, nothing bad will come to you two." She kissed their heads and didn't speak of it again.
Some more months passed and the boys were a year older. The epidemic that had been going around seemed to ease up a bit but not enough as people were still dying from the odd sickness going around. Nathaniel was in his father's study room with Keith, messing with the books their father had left behind. He heard a soft thud and frowned, glancing at Keith, "Did you hear that?" Keith tilted his head, "Hear what?" Nathaniel shook his head, "I don't know. Stay here, I'll go see just so I know if I'm crazy or not." He flashed a smile and left the room to go see what he had heard. He searched the house all the way to the kitchen and frowned, "Odd..."
He was about to turn out of the kitchen wen golden blond hair caught his eye on the floor behind the island counter. Fear started to tingle inside him as he slowly looked around the counter. He dropped to his knees, his eyes wide with horror as he saw his mother on the floor, "M-Mom...?" He moved closer to her, shaking her, "Mom, are you ok?" When she didn't even stir he started to panic, turning her over the best he could and saw she wasn't breathing. Tears started to well in his eyes, "Oh god..." He shakily got up as he heard Keith, "Brother? Where are you?" Keith stopped and Nathaniel quickly stepped in the view of their mother's body, a very nervous smile crossing his lips, "K-Keith... I'm going to have to ask you to be very c-calm... Ok...?"
