Rose shifted impatiently in her seat as her hair was being braided by her mother, Samantha.
"Sit still!" her mother scolded lightly, she had a faint Irish accent, "I'm almost done..."
Rose sighed, sitting still. She glanced around the room they were in and noticed her brother in the doorway. She smiled some, "Hey Ash!" She had an Irish accent herself only it was far more noticeable.
He smiled back, nodding once, "Hey sis, how's it going?"
Samantha replied for her, "All done. Ashton, are you ready yet?" She glanced at her son who nodded. She smiled and looked at the braid she had just finished for Rose.
Rose looked up at Samantha, "Is it good?" Samantha rolled her eyes, "Is it good... Of course it is love now come on, you two got to get to school."
Rose got up and hugged Samantha before running to Ashton and dragging him with her, "Come on, come on, come on!" She pulled on his arm eagerly, almost running into their father. "Slow down, geez, I didn't think you would be so eager to get there."
Rose stared up at her father with a bright smile, "Of course I am, I promised Alex Ashton and I were going to be there on time today."
Samantha walked up behind the two and looked at their father, "She did. Mike, you wouldn't happen to know if there's any coffee left do you?" He shook his head in reply, "I wouldn't know, Rose may have drank it all." He glanced down at her.
Rose frowned, "Did not, I swear!"
Ashton cuffed his sister over the head, "Sure. Come on, I won't let you break your promise." He smiled and the two of them went off to school.
The day went on and Ashton made sure they got there on time. By the end of school Rose tagged along with her two friends and Ashton to the playground. Rose kept getting odd feeling while they were there but tried not to show it, hoping it would just go away. As the hour progressed however, her feelings grew. Ashton eventually noticed and frowned. He walked over to her and whispered, "Rose, are you ok?"
Rose shook her head and he sighed, "Alright, want to go home? You're not having those same feelings again are you?" Rose reluctantly replied, " I am... Can we go home please? I don't want to have to move again...."
Ashton's frown deepened, "We didn't move because you turned last time."
Rose looked away, her orange eyes growing teary, "Yes we did, I know we did... Ash, why do i have to be so different?"
Her brother shook his head, "I don't know... Look we'll figure it out alright? One of these days, for now lets just get home and say goodbye to Myra and Alex." He hugged her comfortingly, "I promise it'll be ok, no matter what."
Rose nodded and hugged him back. She winced as she got the same feeling again. Ashton sighed and looked back at their friends. "Alex, Myra, we gotta get going."
Alex and Myra nodded, "Alright. See ya."
Ashton waved a hand and took Rose's hand, leading her away. As Rose glanced behind her, she caught Alex's gaze for a moment before looking away. Ashton and Rose managed to get home before Rose 'changed'. It was a strange and mysterious matter that they dealt with for the past three years.
Another week had passed when it all went wrong. Rose was sitting in the cafeteria talking to Alex who she had gotten rather close with in the past few months they had known each other. Ashton was talking to Myra at a table nearby, not noticing his sister. Rose got her odd feelings again but it was so sudden and so strong that she yelped, standing and backing away. Alex panicked, "Rose?! Are you ok?" Ashton looked up at that moment and his eyes widened, "Rose..."
Rose turned into a green tiger, lager then a normal one. She had long jagged claws and long sharp fangs and instead of black stripes they were a darker green. Her pelt was ruffled and ragged rather then smooth and soft. Her eyes had a faint glow and she grew delirious quickly. Kids all around started screaming and panicking as they fled. Ashton got to Rose first, "Rose, come on we have to get out of here, now."
He pulled gently on her and she growled in response. He pulled away and looked towards Alex and Myra, both of them standing where they were in fear and confusion. Rose whimpered seeing the fear in their friends' eyes and moved backwards before scampering off, her paws sliding a little on the tile floor. Ashton tried to explain but couldn't and he went after Rose.
Rose heard Ashton shout after her and she slid to a halt but not before hitting a wall at the end of a hallway. She had tears running down her face through her fur and some dripped from her whiskers. She looked at Ashton with wide fearful eyes. He caught up to her and tried to calm her, "Not here Rose... You cant just run through the school like this, we have to get you home before anyone else sees you."
Rose barely listened as her brother dragged her along. The moment they were outside, she leaped the fence and ran through the stretch of woods to their house. She could never forget the look in her friends' eyes in that cafeteria.
Ashton eventually got home as well after protectively explaining that it was just a little magic trick his sister did. He was believed but they expelled them both. Rose didn't care as she lay curled up in a tight ball on the living room floor, her mother trying to calm her down as their father paced trying to figure out what to do.
Ashton knelt down beside Rose while Samantha went to their father to talk to him. Ashton stroked the top of Rose's head between her ears and spoke in a soothing voice, "Rose, its alright... I'm sure things will be just fine. I told them it was just a trick we did. They believed it but we did get expelled for it... It doesn't matter though. Rose, please don't be so upset, it hurts to see you like this. I want a happy sister not one that thinks everything is her fault."
Rose looked up at Ashton and uncurled herself, slowly changing back into her human form. She managed a small smile, hugging him, "I... I'll try to be happy Ash... For you..." Ashton hugged her gently back, "Good, now no more tears you hear? Mom and dad will figure this out and it'll all be fixed."
Rose nodded and they sat there on the floor together, comforting one another that everything would turn out ok. A day passed when someone came to the house. The doorbell rang and Mike had gone to answer it. A man stood there with a cane and he had a smile on his face, the two greeting each other. Rose peeked out of the kitchen at the door and tilted her head, her natural curiosity getting to her.
Mike let him in and Samantha greeted him as well. Rose looked back into the kitchen, "Ashton! Someone's here... I don't recognize him though..." Ashton looked up from what he was doing and raised an eyebrow before walking over and looking past her to see their parents talking to the man.
Samantha glanced at Mike as he looked at him, "We're very much grateful for your offer. We'll be there in a few hours after we pack some things."
The man nodded, "Very well, its no problem for an old friend. I'll see you then."
They said their goodbyes and he left. Rose nudged Ashton whispering, "Did he go?" Ashton gave her a slight nod and she sighed wondering who he was.
Samantha glanced towards the kitchen where Rose and Ashton were and sighed, "Alright little eavesdroppers." Rose frowned and nudged Ashton out of the kitchen following close behind him, "Who was that guy?" she asked.
Mike replied, "An old family friend. He's offered us a place to stay until we can get settled and situated."
"What's his name?" Ashton asked. "He goes by Mr. Gold." their father replied.
Rose stood there looking unsure. "Are we moving again?" Her voice was quiet and had a hint of shame in it.
Ashton looked at her and frowned, " Rose, don't start this again please. Yes we're moving but we have no choice. Don't look so ashamed like it's your fault either." He hugged her, "Please..."
Rose hugged him back, her voice somewhat muffled by his chest as she buried her face into it, "Ok..."
A few hours later as promised after they had packed, they left to Storybrooke where Mr. Gold lived. There Rose would find a way to fit in, be happy and live her life without being afraid of what she is, finding out her relation to other relatives she didn't know she had and having friends that would understand her in ways she never thought anyone, even her own family, ever could.
