A young blond girl about the age of six wandered the golden fields outside her home. She watched the clouds above her with wide green eyes.
"Fawn!"
The girl tilted her head as she heard her name being called and turned to see who it was. She saw no one and frowned, unsure. She heard her name again and followed the voice. It wasn't one she recognized but it drew her onwards towards the forest just passed the fields she was playing in.
As Fawn wandered passed the field, she heard her name again but in a lower tone. She grew ever more curious and started going into the tall oak trees until she came across a large cave. It had been an hour at least since she had left the fields already but it didn't occur to her that much time had passed. The cave beckoned her to come in with a light blue swirl of light emanating within. Drawn to it, she went inside, keeping a hand outstretched to touch the wall of the darkening cave. The blue light swirled above her allowing her to see a little.
She heard her name as a whisper now several times, luring her closer. It suddenly stopped when she reached the back of the cave. She frowned, "Hello?" Glancing around she saw no one still and began to wonder what the voice was. She sighed, deciding to leave when to the side next to her the bright blue light swirled around a staff and her eyes widened. It was a gorgeous staff with ancient designs etched into it and a light purple crystal attached to the top of it.
She reached for it cautiously, not knowing any better. She got a tingling feeling in her hands when she touched it and jerked away, dropping it when it zapped her. She frowned, "What is that thing...."
"A curse you will deal with forever..." the same voice answered her.
Fawn stood there confused, "What?" Fear sent chills down her spine as she looked around desperately, "What do you mean a curse? Who are you?!" There was no reply and she panicked, running from the cave and leaving the strange staff behind.
She got lost rather quickly having never been in the woods before and she didn't know how far in she really was. She started crying a little from fear and tried to think of what to do. There were stories of the beasts out here that easily gave one nightmares. Being out here reminded Fawn of those stories and she tried to keep quiet, fear sending her in another direction in hopes to get back to the beautiful golden fields.
They're just stories, they're just stories, that's all they are just.... Stories.... But are they really? Will I really die out here?
Her thoughts made her even more afraid for what might happen to her and she started running. She stopped within a few minutes, panting. She heard howls echo in the trees around her and she froze. She didn't have anything to protect herself with from the creatures that she now saw circling through the underbrush around her. She stood there petrified and knew she was most likely to die soon.
A dark creature with long fangs and long sharp claws prowled out from the bushes. It looked almost bare skinned with long fur at the end of its long whip like tail and around its neck, almost like a lion's mane. It snarled at her, crouching down as the others looking very similar to it stalked out as well, surrounding her. Fawn closed her eyes and vaguely reached out with one hand. As the first creature was about to pounce on her, the same bright blue swirl flashed around her hand, the staff appearing in her grasp as it did.
Fawn opened her eyes, feeling the same tingling sensation in her hand and was confused by it. The staff glowed and the creatures that surrounded her suddenly screeched and whined, running off and the staff stopped glowing. She stood there gaping at what just happened and couldn't help but grin.
The voice spoke to her in her head once more, The staff protects you, remember it always. You'll eventually learn how to use it.
Fawn tilted her head, "Will it help me get home?"
Home?
Fern nodded and it replied with a sly tone, Why sure it will. Tell me... Where is this 'home' of yours? Is it full of people?
Fern sighed, "Yes it is. My home is just passed the golden fields."
Then there is where we shall go.
A green swirl of light surrounded her and she vanished taking the staff with her and was back home. She smiled, tears in her eyes, "Home at last..." She went into her house, still holding the staff but then suddenly something took her over. The staff glowed and as her brother came to greet her he stopped and started dying.
Fawn frowned, "No stop! What are you doing?!"
I told you dearest, that this staff is cursed and forever attached to you no matter what you do. Thanks for the lovely meal you've provided though it makes us.... Hungrier....
Fawn panicked but there was nothing she could do, the staff killing her family and from there the rest of the village she lived in. She was left in a mess of tears from all that was going on around her, all the guilt and shame she felt.
The voice sighed, Don't pout love, you just gotta see the benefits of this. Your family and village didn't like you very much and you know it. They deserved to die the way they did.
Fawn stopped crying as she thought about it. The rage of the curse overtook her and from there she burned down the town, scorched the golden fields and left.
Over time the curse grew on her, taking over her personality. It forced her to wipe out entire civilizations as she travelled from one world to the next, killing people in twisted, evil ways. Eventually she earned the title Mononoke. She came across one family in particular when she was about twelve, a magical royal family. She slaughtered the parents and sister to a boy known as Jay in front of him.
Randomly, part of her original personality came back and she struggled with the curse to murder Jay as well. She attacked him but he fought back, grabbing a sword. They fought for a while as the magic the staff was drawing in from Jay slowly destroyed his home. Mononoke eventually lost, getting stabbed in the leg that left permanent pain and suffering for years to come as well as a scar.
She left Jay to his ruins and went back to destroying other places, the curse taking over her personality once more. Through out the whole time she dealt with this curse, her inner self struggled to be rid of it. Eventually she managed to overpower it and tried to destroy the staff several times to be rid of the wretched curse. All her attempts led to failure however as it was impossible to even put a single scratch on it. She ended up in Neva after a while, becoming a leader there. Her curse led her to do terrible things though, banning families, ripping families apart, breaking down the peoples' systems. She was eventually banned herself and moved on to another realm.
She kept her truer personality though and had changed her name several times over the years after all that. When she was most torn apart by her curse, she hadn't the slightest idea as to what her true name was. Every time the name Mononoke was spoken it sent fear throughout anyone who heard it. She was a monster to all and one you wouldn't want to mess with. She became those horror stories that were once told to her about those creatures that had attacked her so long ago when she first gained the curse.
After a time she settled with the name Erin and kept it as her true name despite all the other ones she had ever used. She was able to keep her cruelty at bay and one day found a portal that she figured may lead her to a better life in this place she heard was called Storybrooke. She went through it and there was able to break the curse and find something to make herself of, finding love and passion she never had before.
