“They’re coming for you. Prepare. Prepare. Prepare.” The voices say.
“Prepare for what?” I scream in a high squeaky voice.
“Prepare.” They chant.
Before I can scream in reply, dark figures start closing in on me. The voices are still chanting, but much quieter now. They are closing in on me. Is this what the voices were telling me to prepare for? How could I prepare for this? I’m seven years old for god’s sake!
The glistening feeling of ice wraps around me. Only, I’m not afraid of it. I welcome it happily. The creatures around me screech in frustration. And pain. I’m shaking, but I need to do this. This is what I was born for.
Suddenly, everything changes. Well not everything… It’s no longer a seven year old in a coma fighting a group of demons, but someone over twice her age exchanges places. Me. I’m watching myself, and our eyes meet. Her beaming smile slowly fades as she crumples to the ground letting the demons tear her apart. Her eyes never leave mine, even when all traces of life leave her features. I’m dead.
My pulse is normal, I’m breathing regularly, I’m not watching myself die, and I’m not scared. I’m not anything. I don’t know what I should feel. Watching the life slip out of my own eyes should horrify me. But why would I just give up? It was just a dream, I think to myself, but I know that’s a lie. I knew this stuff all along. I shouldn’t have shuddered at the mere thought of when I was put into a coma throughout the years. It taught me what I need to do. What I need to prepare for, within two days.
I should be shaking with fear. I’m not. I have always had a strong distaste of ice since I fell through it while playing on the pond when I was young, therefore putting me in a coma. Only, it is the one chance I have at saving Damon and I from dying.
While searching for something, anything, that could possible lead me in the right direction, I read a story. I realize now how valuable one of the stories is.
“All I’m saying is that I think they were etairons. Hades got them that day when they were swimming. It explains how they just up and disappeared, never to be found again.” I argue.
“What makes you think they were etairons? They could’ve just been a couple out for a swim, and people made up these preposterous stories about them.” Damon snaps.
I sigh, “Why would someone make such ludicrous stories just to get people to laugh at their disappearances? Did I mention that their bodies were never found? Hades kidnapped them. Why are you being so difficult about this?”
“Well I don’t see why you are droning on about this couple, hmm, Galen and Elektra? They were just lovers that ran off to be alone together. What is so wrong about that?”
“Nothing, if that was the case. The stories say that in the last spot they were seen at, was found to be covered in ice. I had a dream that involved ice, if you must know. It connects.”
He is silent for a few moments. Lost in thought, I would assume. Suddenly, his faces screws up in confusion. “Why am I not having dreams and icy sensations like you do?”
I just shrug. I never really thought about that… But since he brought it up, curiosity sparks in me. I say, “I don’t know. But I want to find out before it’s too late.”
I call my Dad to let him know about my theory, and then ask him why Damon isn’t experiencing what I am. He mumbles to himself trying to find the right words before replying. I also hear the click of his office door locking so no one can hear us; smart man.
