The ring of a nearby cellphone wakes me up. Not because of the annoying ring, but the fact that it’s not my cellphone that’s ringing. I jump out of my bed and start to run to the door. When I reach the door, I decide to glance behind me. I’m left dumbfounded at the sight of Damon sitting in my computer chair, sleeping.

“Damon?” I ask. “Damon?” I repeat, louder.

He flings himself out of the chair and stands upright in a panic.

“Are you okay Seph?” He asks.

“Yea? Um, what are you doing in my room?” I ask.

“Well, I was just-” His cellphone disrupts he thoughts. “I, uh, I have to take this. Be right back.” He says, while walking into the hallway.

I press my ear to the door to listen.

“She doesn’t suspect anything.” He says with a pause as the person on the other end replies. “No, she doesn’t know. Everything has gone as planned.”

His voice sounds different. More off pitch and scratchy, which is unusual and I don’t really understand how his voice is sounding so different. And what is he talking about? Me?

“I’ll get her there unharmed.” He says harshly. After another pause, he mutters something, and I don’t catch it. I hear his footsteps coming to my door, so I jump back and sit on my bed.

He walks into the room, clears his throat, and says, “So you’re doing okay?” as if nothing just happened.

“Yea I guess. How did I get here last night?”

“Cae dropped you off, well, he carried you inside actually. You were out cold. He said you guys stopped for coffee and lost track of the time when you were catching up.” He shrugs. I take it that I’m not supposed to share the little, I went to the World of the Dead, experience. So I keep my mouth shut and go with it.

“Oh yea.” I say with a forced laugh. “Well that’s sweet of him. We had a great time.” I say with a smile. “So why were you asleep in my room?”

“I don’t trust Cae, I wanted to be the first one with you to know if you were okay, and if what he said actually happened. Did it? You just went for coffee?”

I do my best to hide any hint that I’m lying in my voice and say, “Yep, we went for coffee and talked.”

He raises an eyebrow. “Okay. Well, Happy actual birthday. Feel any older?”

“Nope.” I say, and bite my lip. I’m terrified for what might happen today.

“You should, you’re old.”

“Hello, we’re the same age.”

He snickers. “Well, start researching in your dad’s study. I’ll make you breakfast.” He smiles, and walks out of the room.

I only just realized that I’m no longer in Gabi’s black dress. I’m in fuzzy pink pajama bottoms and a grey hoody. Desi. I’m glad it was her instead of my parents. I’ll thank her later. I go into my closet and find a pair of jeans, and keep the hoody on.

I didn’t realize how hungry I was until I nearly fell while walking to Dad’s study. My stomach keeps growling, and I’m getting a headache trying to focus on the small print. I finally decide to wait until Damon gets back with food. What was he talking about on the phone? I want to ask him, but I don’t want to be caught snooping.

I’ve been waiting close to twenty minutes for Damon to return with food. I’m so hungry, and I’m wasting time. The last time I checked, it was 9:42 AM. Seven hours till my official Naming begins, and I will still have to be there an hour early so I can talk to Gwenn. Unable to resist, I decide to go downstairs. When I stand up, I instantly feel light headed, and my vision is speckled with black dots, and I fall down. Only, instead of hitting the floor, I keep falling, just as I did when I went to talk to Elektra.
