So, once at a combined orchestra and band concert, my two friends and I were sitting together. They both play cello and one also played trumpet. The trumpet player emptied his spit valve on the other friend's cello. Now whenever we bug him about it (which is rather often) he argues that he didn't get spit on the cello because spit valves are full of "mouth condensation"- not spit.
