Sophie and Sally's Apartment
Sophie Reese
It was nearly time to leave my apartment. I took one last look in the mirror and nodded at myself in approval. I had chosen a grey pantsuit with a white blouse - simple but professional. Of course, I had no idea what this Casper would be like, but I wanted to ensure he knew this was purely business.
I grabbed my purse and quickly double-checked that I had my can of pepper spray. The pepper spray had two purposes. One was to ensure that nothing got out of hand with guy Casper if he turned out to be a creep. And number two was to blind anyone who tried to mug me.
I didn't live in the classiest part of town. After my grandparents died, I sank all my inheritance into saving the community centre, so I lost pretty much everything.
I straightened up my blouse and headed towards the front door. As I passed the kitchen, I heard my roommate Sally call me.
"Sophie, is that you?"
I would have been homeless if it wasn't for my roommate and boss, Sally. One December morning, she found me in a cafe trying to keep warm after the gas company had cut my heating. I had been down to my last twenty dollars when she offered me a place to stay and a part-time job in her second-hand bookstore.
I was lucky she found me, although she did take some getting used to.
Sally was a little eccentric. She was an artist, writer, and recluse.
The only time I had ever seen her outside the bookshop was at the cafe; after that, she would only stay in the store or our apartment above the store.
She was sitting at the breakfast table in her favourite bright red kimono dressing gown, nursing a cup of green tea. Her long black hung over her shoulder in a loose ponytail, and it looked like she had just gotten out of bed.
As I walked past the kitchen, she lifted her head and asked, "Are you going for a job interview at a bank?"
"No, I'm not going for a job interview at a bank."
"So you woke up this morning and chose to wear that?"
"I'm wearing it because I have a business dinner to attend this evening."
"Since when did you have a business dinner to attend?"
"Since a mysterious benefactor decided to rescue the community centre from Brad Evan's evil chain of dollar stores."
"What?"
"This morning, a complete stranger saved our community centre. Some random guy showed up on his behalf and told me that his boss had seen my campaign, and wanted to help out, so he brought the community centre back off Brad Evans to give to me."
