(AANG'S POV)

Of course, everyone was staring at me in complete slack jawed disbelief. Well, except for Toph. She was staring directly to my left.

"What do you mean?" Zuko asked, while the other two stood baffled.

"I found her on a little island off the coast of the earth kingdom. She was starving and alone, and she went into the Avatar State, I think to save herself. Then she passed out again. I talked to Avatar Roku on the way back, and he told me that years before you guys found me in the iceburg, a piece of my soul broke off and bonded with hers, making us co-Avatars."

It would seem none of them knew how to react to this, and I shook my head, frustration rising.

"I know it doesn't make sense. It goes against everything we've ever known about the Avatar. But I don't care. It doesn't matter. I need to keep her here, keep her safe." I turned abruptly to go back into my room, and the second I touched the handle the door opened.

Y/N stood, disbelief on her face as she stared up at me, a good six inches shorter than me. I felt my cheeks flush, and I opened my mouth to explain, being cut off by her grabbing my arm and yanking me into the room, shutting the door behind us.

"I'm the what?"

(Y/N'S POV)

Aang didn't seem to know how to react, and I stepped backward, stumbling and falling onto my rear in front of him.

"I can't even bend. How am I..?" I whispered, and he knelt down in front of me, taking one of my hands.

"You have a piece of my soul inside of you, it's bonded to yours. I think you can go into the Avatar State, and you can bend there, but out here.." He tried to explain, and I shook my head, confused.

He stood suddenly, pulling me up and putting himself between me and the door, snapping into a defensive fighting stance.

The shelf flew backwards, and the door broke open, a girl about my height stepping in. Her face turned towards me, and I took note of her eyes, glassy and unseeing.

She pointed to Aang.

"You. Leave. I'm gonna talk to what'shername."

Aang opened his mouth to retort and I placed a hand tentatively on his arm, drawing his attention from her to me. His eyes were worried, and I smiled reassuringly.

"It's okay." I rubbed his arm gently, and watched him visibly relax from his defensive stance within seconds. My eyes moved to the door, and I saw two guys standing there in shock. The guy with a burn up the side of his face looked directly at me, and I smiled at him, catching him off guard. I waved, and he lifted a hand cautiously, waving back and breaking a real smile.

He stepped away from me and it felt strange, like something was pulling me with him. I fought it, staying where I was and standing my ground against the blind girl. I watched him go, and he turned back at the door, giving me a sad wave.

With him and the guys gone, I turned my full attention to the girl, who was still just standing.

"Um..hi." I spoke, unsure of how to approach her. She stood completely poker face for a moment before cracking a smile.

"God, I love messing with twinkle-toes." she laughed, walking forward. "My name's Toph. I'm an earthbender, it's nice to meet you."

I relaxed, breathing a sigh of relief. "My name is Y/N, and I'm afraid I'm not a bender."

Toph tilted her head, staring through me confused. "You aren't a bender? I thought you were another Avatar."

I shook my head, and then realized she wouldn't be able to see me.

"I don't know, I've never known about it. To be honest, I'm just going off of what Aang says." I looked around my surroundings. There were a few trinkets with Air symbols on them, along with a collection of stuff from other kingdoms.

"Well, you should come with me." Toph said, turning sideways towards the door. "I'm hungry, and I assume you are as well."

My stomach rumbled in response, and we both laughed, heading out of Aang's room and across the hall into a slightly cleaner room.

A girl looking older than me sat in the middle of the room, turning to us when we entered. She looked guilty about something, and I decided immediately to not push it. Something about here I didn't like though.

The girl rose to her feet, crossing to me, her blue eyes curious. "Hi! I'm Katara. It's nice to meet you." I nodded. "I'm Y/N."

She looked me over from head to toe, at my dirty and torn clothes, too big now that I was practically a skeleton, my dirty and disheveled black hair, coarsely cut. I felt ashamed, lowering my eyes to the floor.

"Why don't we get you cleaned up?" she suggested, and I smiled eagerly, pushing aside the uncalled for resentment I felt bubbling in my stomach.

I sat on the floor, dressed in fresh clothes. They were a pretty orange and yellow, almost like sunshine. They were the only things that would fit me, and I felt oddly comfortable with the pants.

We had gotten me washed up, free of sand and dirt, and Katara kept complimenting my skin. I knew I was far too pale for a waterbender, and she smiled at me. While she worked, we had been talking about them, their travels, and the people they knew.

Now I sat cross legged on the floor, Katara using waterbending to gently wash all the knots out of my hair that we couldn't get out through the bath. She used a small knife to neatly cut the ends of my hair, so it fell to about my chin, completely even. Rather than put it up I left it down, falling like smoke. Tucking a few strands behind my ears I brushed my bangs to the side, smiling up at Katara, who looked very pleased with her work.

I scooted to Toph, who had been sitting on the floor, interjecting in the conversation between bites of some sort of meat.

"Toph! Toph!" I smiled, tossing my head on her lap, looking up at her and taking her hand. "Touch my hair, it's so soft!"

She let me guide her hand to my hair and she ran her fingers through it, smiling.

"You're right! It's almost as soft as Appa!"

"Who's Appa?"

All three of us laughed, and I heard the door open. Turning my head, still in Toph's lap, I saw the two guys from earlier and Aang. Aang subtly avoided Katara, and I raised an eyebrow at her, earning a sad shake of her head. The earlier resentment filled my gut again and I had a better understanding of where it came from.

Aang came to sit next to me, and I put my legs across his lap.

"Heya, Aang! Heya, people I don't know yet!" I chirped, happy.

The guy with the scar smiled at me, while the other one, who looked a lot like Katara, sat down next to her.

"My name is Zuko." scar guy said, his voice rougher than I expected. I turned to the other dude, who gave me the once over and then relaxed a bit.

"I'm Sokka. And you are?"

I grinned, rubbing my head against Toph's hand, urging her to keep petting my hair, to which she obliged.

"My name's Y/N." I smiled, feeling strangely at ease now that Aang was back, his arms draped over my legs, playing with the end of the pair of pants on one leg.

"These are my old clothes." he spoke wistfully, his mind somewhere else as he played with the fabric. I smiled sheepishly.

"Sorry, they were the only ones that fit. Kinda." I explained, standing up and revealing that even they were a bit too big, looking baggy on me. The group laughed, and I sat back down, smiling at Aang.
