Two Bit

"Johnny, come on. Let mommy rest, I'll go show you your baby brother and sister."

On this June 17th, 1975 my wife of seven months gave birth to my twins. First was born Annie Elizabeth Mathews, after Annabelle and Maia. She weighed just under seven pounds and has stunning blue eyes like her mother. Next Dallas Steven Mathews was born, Maia really wanted to name him Dallas Keith but I've always hated my name so I thought that this was the better option. Dallas weighed just over seven pounds and also has his mother's eyes.

I carry Johnny to the window of the nursery room where a couple of nurses are attending to the babies. Sleeping in the middle--in the same incubator because they're cry otherwise--is a pink bundle and blue bundle. They're both fast asleep and snuggled up close to each other.

"They're right there." I point and Johnny follows my point.

"They're just snoozing away, huh?" He laughs and I smile.

"Did I ever tell you the story of your uncle Johnny and uncle Dally?" I ask as we take a seat on the little bench.

"I don't think so." Johnny admits.

"Well Uncle Pony has always told it better but I'll give it a shot." I clear my throat. "Your uncle Pony stepped out into the bright light from the darkness of the movie house, he had two things on his mind. Paul Newman and a ride home....
