I wasn't really looking forward to this dinner party that Emma was hosting tonight I thought to myself as I slipped on the dark blue floor lengthen gown she had picked out for me. I really didn't understand why people threw dinner parties. It is just a gathering where you invite all the people you sort of hate to your house so you can boost your pride a little by showing off every fancy thing you own.
When I was younger, before my sister was killed, my parents threw dinner parties for work all the time. They dressed us up in the best little dresses and they made sure every little detail looked perfect. Which believe me was no fun at all. My sister and I had to take dinner manner lessons before every party that way my parents knew we would be well behaved and impress their business friends.
I sighed and headed for the dinning room. I dreaded this dinner party thinking it would be like my parents but as I came down the stairs and heard laughter filling the room I could tell it would be different. I sheepishly entered the dinning room embarrassed as so many eyes starred at me due to the fact that I was late.
"Oh! Here she is! The star of the show! Ha ha i'm just kidding but this Violet the girl I've been bragging about!" Emma said slightly tipsy.
I waved slightly as she gestured for me to come over to her. She grabbed a hold of my shoulders and held me close. "Today we are having this dinner party in honor of my beloved friends, Violet's parents who tragically passed away recently." She said to the room full of people before turning to me.
"Violet I know your parents couldn't have a funeral and a long time ago your parents told me to promise them that if they ever passed away I would have a party to celebrate their lives and not mourn their deaths. I know this may be to hard for you but I hope you don't mind celebrating with us." Emma said to me while hugging me.
Tears fell out of my eyes as I nodded my head and took a seat. That is exactly like my parents to make a friend promise to celebrate their lives instead of mourn which is probably why I threw that party instead of mourning like a normal human being.
I smiled at Will who was seated across from me slightly nudging his leg with mine before returning my attention to Emma who was telling wild stories about my parents from back in high school. I chuckled as she told the story of how my mother punched the school queen bee for flirting with my dad. I guess now I know where I got that from.
After a few hours of laughter and tears passed by it was my turn to give a speech about my parents. I got up slowly walking to the head of the table getting a few nods and warming smiles from people I could only assume knew my parents when they were kids. I quickly glanced at Will who was smiling brightly at me holding a thumbs up as I cleared my throat and began to speak.
"Most of you knew the wonderful people I called my parents and it is an honor to meet all of you to bad it is under these circumstances. I just wanted to say that even though my parents may be gone they will always have a place in my heart right next to the place my new family holds. I mean it. I wouldn't have been able to survive if I didn't have Emma and her amazing boys. Now don't get me wrong those boys drive me nuts every single one of them." I paused looking at all of the boys silly faces before continuing.
"But you guys mean the world to me and I am truly blessed to have you in my lives. I will forever miss my mom and dad who raised me to be who the woman I am but at least I have you guys." I finished up with tears in my eyes.
Just as I was about to walk to my seat every single one of the Turner boys ran up to me and held me tightly. Even Emma stumbled over to us and held on tight laughing and crying as we all stood there in the middle of the party holding on to each.
After that touching moment the night only seemed to get more exciting as Emma downed another bottle of wine and brought out twister. I opted out of playing with the intention of going to my room to rest but I couldn't help but stay for a little longer as Emma and a bunch of other drunk adults tried to play twister.
Although I was having a blast watching the adults mess up while playing twister Will tugged on my sleeve leading me up the stairs and towards the elevator. "Where are we going?" I asked as he hit a button and we began to go up.
"You'll see." He said smirking.
"Are you leading me to my death because quiet frankly I am too young to die." I said dramatically.
"What? No!? It's supposed to be a surprise!" He said
I turned around and pondered on what could possibly be up on the roof. Nothing I could have imagined would have compared to the beautiful setting that was unfolding before my eyes. As the elevator doors opened I was stunned by the lights glistening in the moonlight. The blanket set up on the rooftop with flowers all around took my breath away.
"When did you have time to do this? More importantly this is so beautiful Will." I said hugging him tightly.
"Well earlier when you said that we should slow things down and that I had to actually take you out on a date I decided to brainstorm and come up with a few things to do but thankfully mom helped me out as did pretty much everyone so I really can't take all the credit." He said sheepishly.
I couldn't believe that a few days ago I was curled up in my bed crying my eyes out now I was in the arms of my best friend. It crazy how things can change in a split second.
