Amber's P.O.V
I still felt myself blushing, but, Parker seemed pretty persistent on me sitting with him. Reluctantly, I set my purse down and took a seat.
I didn't know what to do with my hands so, I pretended to look at my cell phone.
I could sense Parker casting glances at me, then at my phone. But, I still didn't look up. I felt like he asked me to sit out of obligation and my mind was racing for something to do or say to make this less awkward.
I think five minutes had gone before I finally decided to speak.
Luckily, he beat me to it. "So, how have you been?" He asked softly.
I stared down at my boots but then, I decided to make eye contact.
Gosh, why did I do that? He was gorgeous.
"I've been okay," I replied, smiling. "How are you?"
He seemed disappointed at my short answer, but he nodded and replied similarly.
I bit my lip. Gosh, how do I save this conversation?
I looked frantically around for something that I could start a conversation about but my mind was blank.
"I'm bored," I mutterred.
Parker laughed. "We've been riding for five minutes and you're bored already?"
I shrugged. "Not my fault that my seat partner is more interested in his phone than talking."
He grinned at me. "You're one to talk....But,you wanna switch seats with Grayson so you can sit with Joy? I'm sure I can convince him to move."
I shook my head and, as nonchalantly as possible replied, "Nah, too much work." I glanced at him just in time to catch a small smile tug at the corner of his lips.
"Alright. So then, what do you wanna do? We can't just awkwardly sit here in silence." He grinned.
"Okay, let's play twenty questions." I said.
"Alright, what rules do you play by?" He inquired.
"Does anybody play it with rules anymore?" I rolled my eyes.
"I don't know," He turned slightly, so he was facing me more and slid his phone into his pocket to give me his full attention. "I don't really play this game often."
"We just alternate asking twenty questions." I replied.
"Okay, do you want to go first?"
"Sure....Um...okay. What's your favorite kind of pizza?"
"Easy. Pepperoni."
"Me too." I grinned. "Your turn."
"Alright.... What's your favorite color?"
"Red....Parker, we've know each other for like, a year and you don't know this??"
"You mean we've passed each other in the hall, said 'hi' to each other fifty billion times and had like two conversations in the span of a year.... Besides, you didn't know my favorite kind of pizza."
"But, all I ever wear is red plaid. You should know my favorite color more than I should know your favorite kind of pizza." I argued.
Parker shook his head in mock disappointment. "After all of those parties we've been to.... I'm hurt, Amber."
"Parker," I said dryly. "We didn't go together and I wasn't staring at which slice of pizza you were eating!"
"Woah, relax." He said, his eyes sparkling playfully. "I was just giving you a hard time."
I realized how loudly I'd yelled and slowly sunk back into the cushion of my seat, narrowing my eyes at him.
He stared back, but with such a teasing glint, I dropped my stare.
My eyes trailed the floor, landing on something laying over one of his legs.
"What's that?" I asked, pointing at the black object.
"Guitar case," He replied, casually. "I'll let you see it when we get there."
"Why can't I see it now?"
"It's too delacate to take out right now," He shrugged.
I rolled my eyes. "Fine then."
"Now then, are we going to finish the game?" He asked, a smirk tugging at his lips.
"I guess so. But, you can go again," I said, not feeling so motivated anymore to talk to this boy who oddly annoyed me.
"Okay," He didn't seem to have to think so long to come up with a question this time.
"What are your aspirations?"
I looked at him blanly for a moment and then, hesitantly replied. "My aspirations?"
He nodded with anticipation.
It was such a casual question, but something about it felt extremely personal. Not that what I liked to do was particularly a secret. But, it seemed from his subtle facial expressions, that I was a mystery to be solved to him, and a code to be cracked. I honestly liked being a mystery to some people - especially to Parker.
"Well, what are yours?" I inquired, shifting in my seat.
A frown creased his brow as he noticed my uncomfortability.
"Maybe this is a question for another time and another day," He replied, quietly. "That is, if you wouldn't mind discussing it."
I looked at him again. This was honestly the first time we actually had to talk. And, deep down inside, I admitted I enjoyed it far more than I probably should have. But, at the same time, he was being obnoxious and meddling....Or was that just my car sickness talking? Train sickness? Whatever the word is. Maybe that was it. Either way, everything was irritating to me and we still had several hours to drive. I didn't feel like explaining my deepest wishes and passions right now. Not here- inside of a hot and noisy train with the sound of giggling coming from our friends sitting only a few feet away.
"Amber?"
"Oh," I snapped out of my trance. "Sorry. I guess I zoned out for a minute. But, yeah, totally. Let's finish the game later. I just have a headache. I think I'm going to try and take a nap real quick."
"Oh-Okay." He nodded and pulled his phone out again. He didn't tell me he hoped I felt better. He simply nodded and put his headphones in. But then, he seemed hard to read, so that could mean anything.
Gosh, I was thinking too much into this again. Maybe I was trying to crack him like a code.
I sighed and turned my face away from him as I tried to relax.
The loud noises the train made, caused difficulty in my trying to sleep, but I eventually got used to it and began drifting off. Here we go! L.A. bound.
