Parker's P.O.V

"Amber, what's the matter??"Joy asked, putting her hand on Amber's shoulder. All the color had drained from her face when she turned to look at me.

"Th-the guy who was in the basement. He's out there. And there's three people with him." she stammered, biting her lip as she kept her eyes fixed on the slightly fogged up window.

"Are you sure??" I asked.

"YES! Parker, I swear. When the machine cut itself on, those eyes....Oh, he looked like he wanted to kill me. How could I forget." her eyes glanced briefly at me then immediately back to the window.

"Do they see us?" I asked, walking a little closer to her and following her gaze.

"Yes, they're waiting for the traffic to stop. Right there." She pointed at two individuals waiting across the street in dapper looking  Guys, we need to find another way out."

I looked over at Kate's daughter. "May I buy anything?"

She snorted. "Not with that trash you call money."

"But, maybe you can sell it."

"Please hurry!" Amber begged.

"Look, if you're bringing more trouble in here, I don't want it." the woman muttered. "I want you to leave my store."

I quickly walked away from the window, each step I made causing the wood beneath my feet to creak. I searched the tiny store frantically, pushing past racks of vintage clothing, shelves of strange trinkets and a few old lamps. I was trying to think of a plan. Finally, I turned to the woman again.

"Ma'am, we need to get behind the counter."

"No, you're not hiding in here. I don't know who you are." she crossed her arms, frowning.

"Do you have a back door?" Amber asked frantically.

"Ugh. Yes. Just get out now. I swear, I'll call the authorities on you." she stepped aside and allowed us to run out her back door.

"Well, she was welcoming." I muttered, as the door behind us closed...a bit louder than I had hoped.

"C'mon, let's get back to the machine of curiosity and go home." Amber begged

"Okay," I led the way  through the streets, back to our alley, where we had left the machine.

We reached the sidewalk and I stared in disbelief.

Grafitti on the worn walls, garbage surrounded a trash can...everything was in the place it had been in before. But our ticket home?

It was nowhere to be found.

I sighed and leaned my head against the cold, brick wall. My heart was racing and I felt my airway closing up. So. I took my inhaler and put it carefully up to my lips.
As I got my breathing under control, I turned back to face the group.

"What do we do now?" Joy asked, slightly panicked as she shifted from foot to foot.
"What options do we have?" Amber asked. "Those people will be back any minute when they find we're not in there. And we can't stay here. We obviously appear a threat, according to that lady in there."

"But was that lady in there telling the truth?" Grayson inquired. "She seemed a little sketchy."

"We're going to have to assume she was. I mean she was pretty eager to get us out of her store. It doesn't matter, though. We can't risk the time or danger of through this city trying to get help. If she was right, talking to someone else about our situation could get us arrested." I replied.

"So, then, we're going to have to go that way," Grayson said, pointing at the road where the sky seemed to get sunnier, almost as if this city was in a cloud of fog and outside of it was a glorious light.

"Why that way?" Joy inquired. She seemed to ask a lot of questions when she was nervous about something.

"Because that way leads out of the city." I replied, catching on. "Let's go."
