Chapter 26; Nothing Like Us
Zayn Malik's P.O.V. :"WOULDN'T IT be cool if stars danced every time someone fell in love?" Max whispers, turning her head to face me. I nod, staring up at the stars above us. She sighs, chest rising and falling on the cement floor we're laying on. "And if flowers were as tall and strong as trees?"
"What are you on, Max?" I chuckled, smiling at the cute giggle that escaped her. "One minute you're talking about dancing stars and the next you're talking about flowers being over fifteen feet high. You're high."
"Shut up, this is my bliss out state. You can't bully me when I'm in this state," Max laughs, nudging her shoulder against mine. "This is the only state where I don't think about my past and all the problems that come with it."d
"Ooooh, when else do you go into this 'state', Maxy?" I teased, watching her roll her eyes.
"Y'know, the usual times. When Niall kisses me, when I win something, when I hear my little brother talk, after sex." I cough up a lung, eyes wide. Max is wheezing with laughter. "I'm kidding, Zayn! Honest."
"Gosh, you're fucking weird," I mumble, turning my head to face her. She turns hers too, cheek pressed against the cement floor of the apartment rooftop. "But you're pretty fucking awesome too," I add, staring into her soft hazel eyes.
"I know right. Niall tells me that I'm 'cool beans' every night. He's so weird," Max laughs, turning her attention back to the stars. "He's so stupid it's cute. He came into my room a couple nights ago and told me he was gonna miss me so much."
My eyes flicker down to her lips, moving slowly as she continues to talk about Niall, her boyfriend. I watch her face as it breaks into a smile as she mentions how he's teaching her how to surf. I sigh, turning my attention back to the stars.
I kind of tune her out after that, thinking just about her. I smile, thinking of the way she used to swing her backpack over her shoulder. My smile fades, imagining Niall coming over to help her carry her purse to the car for her.
I blink, watching as a shooting star dashes through, creating a space for two stars to shift into together.
That's me, I think, watching the shooting star fade out. If I hadn't just so abruptly shot her down and sent her away, we could've had a chance. And if I hadn't done that, her and Niall would never fallen together in place like two puzzle pieces.
And the sad thing about it, is I'd still be in that puzzle. I'd be like a dumb piece in the corner. She'd be like a piece of a cloud. She'd have four different slots; one for each of the boys. And once they were all connected, they'd form a little cloud. A little family.
Look at me, talking about puzzles and clouds because I'm upset over a girl.
No. Not just any girl. The only girl who has ever understood me. The only girl who has asked me how I felt. The only girl who didn't sugar coat things when they weren't okay. The only girl who knew the difference between getting better and actually getting better.
