Chapter 3; The Mask
Chapter song; Lose It - Oh Wonder

I walked into the hospital carrying two bags of food. Melissa looked up at me from the nurses station and instantly smiled. She rose to her feet walking around the desk to meet me. Her hands eagerly reaching out for the bag.

"Sage, sweetheart, you are a savior from above." She tells me with a laugh as she pulls out some French fries.

I soon chuckle with her, but it was hard to remain happy after what had happened earlier today. She looks up to me noticing the difference in my demeanor. I didn't meet her eyes I just fidgeted with the sleeves of my shirt.

"What going on?" She asks in a much more serious tone, pulling her mom voice out on me.

I looked up at her forcing a smile and laugh, "Oh, come on." I start still forcing the happy facade, "Don't use your mom voice on me. I'm not Scott."

She keeps the stern expression, "Don't do that. Don't pretend you're fine. I know you're not."

With a sigh I look away, back to the doors of the emergency room, "I'm gonna change." I tell her walking to the locker room to change into my scrubs.

The walk there was quiet and she didn't even try to fight me. I was too tired to fight back so I was glad she didn't. I took my time changing into them, my world seemed to slow down. I couldn't move fast. I also couldn't talk about it. Not yet, anyway. I made my way back to where Melissa was still waiting for me. She send me a stern look, but I shrugged it off. That's all I could currently do.

"Are you going to tell me what's really going on?" She asks me tossing the, now empty, bag I had gotten her away.

I shake my head, "No." I sigh looking up at her, "Maybe at the end of the day." I tell her forcing a smile, "Can you get me on a good case today? I could really use one." I ask her sweetly batting my eyes.

She lets out a laugh, "Lucky for you, I have been stationed in the ER today. And even luckier for you, I requested you on my service today. All the other nurses were pretty disappointed." She smirks at me.

"Well aren't I just a lucky duck." I laugh with her as we walk downstairs together.

"That's one way to describe you." She remarks bumping my arms with hers.

I let out a sarcastic laugh with a roll of my eyes. She links arms with me as we enter the Emergency room. She sits down behind the desk beginning chart. I lean against it hovering over her ever so slightly, but like always she knew I wanted something. So she looked up at me and raised a brow.

"So..." I trail with a smirk, "What cases do you have?" I ask raising a brow, "I'd prefer one with guaranteed OR time."

She rolls her eyes at me but nevertheless lets out a few short chuckles, "Something really happened today didn't it?"
