Maybe This Time

Prologue - The Confession

"JJ!", the boy named Oliver called. He was dressed in a cute blue polo and shorts. His hair was well groomed with his favorite spikes.

"JJ, over here!" He called again.

The girl with the pink dress and curly pigtails then look on his direction. When she saw Oliver, the eyes under her glasses twinkled and she flashed her braced teeth with a wide smile.

"Oliver!!" She exclaimed. She ran excitedly towards Oliver and gave him a big hug.

Oliver and Zoe Jane a.k.a JJ are bestfriends since forever. Zoe was always bullied in school because of her huge glasses and braces. But Oliver was always there to tell the other kids to back off.

They pretty much do everything together. Swimming classes, Piano and guitar lessons, they even schedule playdays and sleepover parties. They have matching everything. That was how close they were. They were the most adorable!

"JJ, lets go outside, I have to give you something. " Oliver said.

"Really? Okay. " Zoe answered and they started walking outside. All of the kids are participating on the games Karla's mom has prepared for her birthday party.

"What is it, Oli?" Zoe asked with a confused expression.

Oliver took out two bracelets from his pocket. Both made out of yarns and colorful beads with letters on it. One says Best while the other says Friend.

"Mom helped me to this. Here." He handed one bracelet to Zoe. "Yours says BEST, because you are the best for me!" He beamed.

"OhmyGoshh! They're really pretty! What does yours say?" Zoe asked trying to read Oliver's bracelet.

"Mine says Friends. Because we will be friends forever. " He flashed a very warm smile to Zoe. But there was a hint of sadness in his blue eyes.

Zoe just watched her bestfriend, and her eyes started to water. Her heart was beating so fast. She knows that they are both young, but she asks herself, could this be love? How can someone be so sweet?

"But, why are you giving me a gift? Its not my Birthday! It's Karla's! Remember? We are in her party!" She laughed.

"JJ. I need to tell you something." Oliver said a bit too seriously.

Zoe's heart beats even faster. Beads of sweat are coming out of her forehead. This is it. He's going to tell me he loves me, Zoe thought. But I have to tell him first.

Zoe knows its the right time. And the decision has been made. She is goin to tell Oliver about what she really feels.

"Me first!" She blurted out.

Oliver was caught by surprise and gave her a little nod, gesturing her to go on.

Zoe took her bestfriend's hand and looked straight to Oliver's blue eyes through her glasses.

"Oli. I know that we've been beatfriends for as long as I can remember. We did everything together. We laughed and cried together. You know all my secrets and I know all of yours. I know we're young, but I think I.. Uhmm.. I think.. Well I mean, I think its pretty obvious right?" She laughed nervously.

"I think we're soulmates and I love you." She blurted out. Zoe, herself was surprised with what she said. She was red as a tomato, sweating like a pig and smiling nervously.

Oliver stood still, not daring to move. He just stood there, watching his bestfriend very carefuly. When he realized that Zoe was very serious about everything she said, his eyes started to water. And slowly, he lets go of Zoe's hand.

"I'm sorry, JJ." He lets go of Zoe's hand and before the tears could fall, he turned away and ran as fast as he could. Away from Zoe. Away from his bestfriend.

And Zoe was left to cry..
