The next morning I go out in search of Peter in the marketplace. He left at around 5:00pm yesterday. Whenever I ask him why he has to go so soon, he always claims he has family problems, which makes me suspect that that’s not true.
I walk down the cobblestone streets of the marketplace, which are occupied by way too many tourists, who shouldn’t be in Greece at the time. ¡Adios! Come back in several weeks!
I look in the stores and at the vendors lining the streets, but I don’t see Peter anywhere. I catch a Hispanic man gazing across the street directly at me. He then taps the woman that’s right beside him’s shoulder, and she turns to look at me too. The man speaks in her ear, and obviously I can’t tell what he said to her. She grins and nods. Then to my surprise, the woman gestures for me to come over to her. I point at myself to see if she is definitely addressing me. She nods. I then walk cautiously over to her and the man.
“Hello,” the man says.
“Umm, hi,” I reply.
“My name is Roberto,” says the man.
“And I’m Samantha,” says the woman.
“I’m Nita.”
“Nice to meet you, Nita,” says Roberto. “You have caught our eyes here in the streets of Troy.”
“What ever for?” I ask.
Roberto looks at Samantha, and Samantha vice versa. They look back at me.
“You know that you aren’t the same as the others here, right, Nita?” Samantha asks. “That you’re… different.” I eye them suspiciously.
“You could say that…” I say.
“Roberto,” Samantha says, “I think we should discuss this elsewhere. Somewhere away from the public.” He nods. He looks at me.
“Do you have somewhere where we can talk without the public hearing?” Roberto asks me.
“Yes.”
We go up the easy way to the cottage. I started up the trail first, but somehow Roberto got about ten meters ahead and Samantha wasn’t far behind. I would think I would end up first, considering I am the only person who knows how to get here.
“Is this where you live?” Roberto asks.
“Yes.”
“No one lives with you?” Samantha asks worriedly.
“No. Yesterday there was a shooting frenzy. My whole family died in it. I’m the only one left.”
“Aw, you poor child,” Samantha says.
“Back to business, Samantha,” Roberto says sternly.
“Oh. Right.”
“Nita,” Roberto says. “You are different. Different in a lot of ways. Even though you have just met us, we have common differences than these people. Stating, we are more… powerful… than these people.”
“What do you mean?” I ask.
“I’m saying - ”
“You’re a Mythical, Nita,” Samantha says anxiously.
“Yes, Nita. You are a Mythical.”
“A Mythical?”
“A Mythical indeed. A Mythical is someone like us. Our brain patterns are much more complex than the Mortal brain. We have - ”
