“Sam?” I say into the darkness.
“Why are you looking for Sam?” a voice says back, and I know it’s not Man Voice in my head again (a.k.a. Sam).
“Who are you?” I ask unsteadily.
I hear a snap and the lights turn on suddenly. There stands Griffin in the corner.
“Why are you here?” I ask, more firmly this time.
Sam? I ask the telepathy network.
“Answer my question first,” Griffin says coldly. “Why are you looking for Sam?”
I’m here, says Sam.
Where are you?
Just go outside. I’ll find you.
I look at Griffin and shake my head slightly, then throw open my French doors and jump the railing onto the gravel road and start walking toward the direction Sam said all of the attractions are.
“Nita!” Griffin yells, but I keep walking.
Where are you, please tell me the precise location, I say.
Right here.
I look up but I don’t see anything.
Where? I ask.
Where are you?
On the gravel road, heading to the attraction sites.
Anyone with you?
Griffin showed up in my room and now I’m trying to get away from him but he’s following me.
Deal with what he wants first. I’ll be in the woods.
Why the woods?
Trust your animal instinct, Nita, and come and find me.
I stop walking and turn and face Griffin.
“Leave me alone,” I whimper.
“What’s going on with you, Nita?” he asks.
“Nothing,” I lie.
“No, something is up. Why are you looking for Sam?”
“It’s none of you’re business. I can talk to whoever I want.”
“You’re cheating on me?” Griffin says grimly.
“I never said that!”
“Then what?”
“Sam’s the only one who understands what I’m going through right now,” I cry out, “and he’s the only one that can help me. Not you. Not Peter, or Belladonna or Dana. Sam.”
“Why him? If you explain to me what’s going on, then I’ll be able to help. So why him?”
“Because he is the only other person who is the same species as me!”
