I go back into the Mess Hall and sit back down at the table with Belladonna and Dana.
“Sorry I got annoyed like that,” I say to Belladonna.
“It’s fine. I shouldn’t have been blabbering.”
Samantha stands at the front of the room, trying to get everyone’s attention.
“All right, guys. Each day you will have one hour to meet students here and get to know them. This is known as “Meet Your Fellow Students Hour”. So we alternate. Boys will draw names one day, girls the next. So boys will go first today.”
The boys crowd around the front of the Mess Hall where several bowls sit. They pull slips of paper out of them, read them aloud, then the girl stands and joins him. I sit patiently waiting for mine name to be called.
“Hey.” I turn around and see Griffin. “I got your name.” I smile and stand up.
“So where you wanna talk?” I ask.
“I know the perfect spot.”
We walk outside and walk into the woods. We walk for several minutes along the worn path until we get to a little clearing.
“Right here,” Griffin says. He plops down in the grass. I walk over and look around. The clearing is surrounded by trees, and on one side there’s a little stream. I kick off my shoes and step on the soft terrain. I drop down beside Griffin.
“So what species are you?” I ask.
“I’m a Natural.”
“A Natural?”
“Yup.” He holds out his hand toward the stream. Suddenly, a small amount of water flows in midair toward us. “I can control the four elements: earth, air, fire, and water.”
“Wow.” Griffin directs the water back to the stream.
“I’ve been trying to work on this thing for a while…” he says. He holds out his hand to me, and a bud magically levitates above his palm. Then the bud slowly opens and swirls into a rose, still levitating of course.
“Wow, that’s remarkable,” I say, astounded by the flower. He continues to stare at the flower and the thorns magically evaporate into thin air. He then grabs the floating flower and hands it to me.
“For you,” he says. A smile plays in his eyes. I take it.
“Uh… thanks.” I smile. I set the rose with my shoes so it doesn’t get crushed and I fall back on the grass. I close my eyes and just think of the woods and the wind and the soft grass. I open my eyes again and see Griffin hovering above me, inches away from my face.
“What were you thinking about?” he asks with a smile.
“Just this.”
“This?” He raises an eyebrow. I roll my eyes.
“No. I mean the woods. The peace, the silence. It’s just so beautiful.” Griffin smiles. He’s still hovering above me, and I can feel his warm breath on my face. He eyes my lips. His face comes closer, and he’s only an inch above me. Then he comes closer and he kisses me. And I like it. Our lips become in sync. I run my hands through his soft, dark brown hair. But the kiss ends too soon. Griffin pulls away and sits up. I stay put.
“I shouldn’t have done that,” he says.
“Why? It’s what you wanted to do. I could see it in your eyes.” Griffin does a small laugh and looks away, probably from embarrassment. I reach up and touch his cheek. He looks back at me.
“Don’t be so regretful,” I say.
“I’m just regretting it because it just went snap then it was happening. Like it was happening too soon…”
“Shh.” I sit up and pull him towards me and our lips hit again. And this kiss lasts a little longer, which is better. We stop.
“It’s okay. I’m just not ready to go beyond making out yet,” I say, and Griffin laughs.
“All right. So… back to meeting this cute new student.” He smiles. “Where you from?”
“Troy, Greece.”
“Really?”
“Yup. You?”
“Hah, New York.”
“Ha ha.”
“What’s your favorite color?”
“Blue.”
“Mine’s green.” Griffin sits there for a moment, searching for a question. “Okay. What do you do in your free time?”
“Mostly read. Sometimes I watch movies and stuff, but that’s rarely.”
“Well we’ll have to watch some movies while we’re here.” We laugh.
We spend the rest of the time of “Meet Your Fellow Students Hour” discussing pointless things. When time is up, Griffin walks me back to my cabin.
“I wish we could spend more time just talking,” he says with a grin. I laugh.
“Yea, me too. You know they’re something called tomorrow? We can talk tomorrow?”
Suddenly a bell rings out through the campus. I look at Griffin.
“It’s just the dinner bell,” he says.
“Oh. Well, I’ll see you then.” I turn to go. Griffin grabs my wrist and pulls me back. I look up into his light blue eyes.
“Why can’t we go together?” he asks.
“Um… er… I - ”
“I get it. It’s Peter, isn’t it?” Griffin drops my wrist.
“No, it’s not that. He just my friend. He lived in Troy with me. Why are you suddenly concerned about me hanging out with Peter?”
“They’re glowing.” Peter comes up the trail and steps beside me.
“Of course they are,” I mumble.
“I’ll see you at dinner,” Griffin says. He leans in and gives me a deep kiss. He breaks away and glares at Peter, then walks toward the school. I look at Peter. His eyes are literally cats’ eyes- yellow with a sliver of a pupil. He shakes his head and stomps off to the school. And seriously? This is my first day at this school. First day… I start walking to the school and stride through the doors.
