“It's just a fever." I heard waking up. I opened my eyes to see Jace and Bella. I looked down at my arm and saw a symbol on it.

“I passed out, and you guys tattooed me? Thought that only happened in Vegas." I said jokingly

“It's not a tattoo."

“It's a rune." Bella interrupted Jace in amazement, “They have them for everything, they make you invisible, strong, they heal. They also make you visible. That's why I could suddenly see him. Even if you're hungry..."

“No. The fact that the rune had an effect on you explains why you can see us." Jace said interrupting Bella midsentence.

“I don't get it" I questioned.

“mundanes can't survive the process. the runes are to strong for them, so...now we definitely know you have shadowhunter blood." Jace answered.

“Here, see if these fit." a girl walked up and handed me some clothes. After I was done changing behind the curtain, me and Jace went to see Hodge in the library. I started looking at a scrapbook when I heard Hodge speak.

“She was one of the best, your mum."

“But I don't understand why..." I was about to go on but he cut me off.

“Yesterday you were just a normal girl. Today you feel as though your whole world has been turned upside down. There's only one thing, you need to know. The stories you were told as a little girl about monsters, nightmares, legends whispered around campfires...they're all true. The legend goes, the crusaders summoned an angel, the angel Raziel. Raziel poured his blood into a cup, and those who drank from it became half angel, half human." He told me about the legend.

“Shadowhunters." I stated.

“As did their children and their children's children. Beings of immense power, strong enough to restore balance and protect the world in a war against evil. A war that can never be won, but must always be fought. Demons don't die easily. Whereas we, we remained all to mortal." he concluded.

“Why didn't they just use the cup to create more shadowhunters?" I asked.

“Valentine's exact words. The clave, the keepers of the cup, they were afraid of using its power. They knew that hardly anyone who drank from it survived. Valentine Morgenstern drew a circle of friends together, young, idealistic shadowhunters, to help him steal the mortal cup from the clave. But he didn't want to protect humanity. He believed there had to be an evolution of shadowhunters, something more powerful. He began experimenting, using the mortal cup. He learned how to summon demons. He even injected himself with demon blood so he could control them. He wanted to rule. Your mother, to prevent that, stole the cup from him, and vanished into thin air." he explained about Valentine.

“But if she's the only one that knows where the cup is, then..."

“Maybe she isn't." Hodge said interrupting me, “Maybe she told someone else. Someone who doesn't know she knows." he finished.

“The silent brothers are ready for her." Jace told Hodge.

“Why didn't Hodge come with us?" I asked when we got close to the graveyard.

“He hasn't left the institute in years. Some say it's a spell."

“He's agoraphobic." I commented when we got to the tomb. When one of the silent brothers came, we went inside the tomb. As we got to the room, Jace stayed behind while I was in the middle. The silent brothers muttered some words and suddenly I'm in my memories.

I'm back in my house, I hear a younger me skipping and singing. I saw my mom using make up to cover her runes. She hurried me out the door before I could see the runes. Luke came into my life. I saw my mom give our neighbor some cards and a face before I fell to the floor and drew something on the ground. Jace ran over to see if I was okay but stopped when he saw what I drew. “Your block is stronger than I anticipated. It can only be undone by the one who put it there." Jace said.

“I have no idea who put it there." I complained.

“You wrote it. Your mind remembers the inverted image. Just have to look at it differently. B-a-n-e. Bane."

“Who?" I asked Jace. I have never heard of him before.

“Magnus bane. He's a warlock. I should have known."

“Well, let's go talk to him then."

Not like that. We're going to need some help from Isabelle." when we got back to the institute, Jace explained the situation and she took me to get ready.

“This is a top." I said when I put the clothing on.

“It's a dress." she protested.

“I can't pull this off."

“Well, actually, with the right shoes..."

“No, I mean...this dress is so tight, it's like a second skin. Don't you have any thing else." I interrupted. I went over to help pick out shoes.

“If you go out looking like your mundane self, we won't get within a hundred feet of magnus bane. He's the high warlock of Brooklyn. now, stop complaining, come over here." Isabelle said moving me in front of the mirror.

“Hold this." she said handing me a hair comb.

“That guy Alec doesn't like me very much." I said.

“That guy alec is my boyfriend." she commented.

“Than you already know about his feelings towards you."

“See? You look pretty." she said finished with my hair.

“How is being dressed like a hooker gonna help me find my mom?" I asked her walking out the door.

“Easy now, those are my clothes. Doesn't she look great, alec?" she asked.

“She looks like someone whose phone number should be on a bathroom wall." was his answer. That hurt. Bella coughed the word whore towards me. I don't think anyone heard it except for Isabelle who was glaring at her now.

“I think you look great." Jace told me softly softly. I smiled in thanks.
