I relaxed back against the mattress for a few minutes, letting the night catch up to me. Unexpected was a wholly inadequate word for it. Unprecedented? Certainly. Impossible? Well, nothing was impossible, just highly improbable. My mind wandered into a quagmire of philosophical debate on the whys and hows of this situation. I snapped out of it when the door was unlocked.
I looked over and saw a guard come in with a tray of food. Another was holding the door open. The man kept his head down, not looking at me, and placed the tray on a desk I hadn't previously noticed. He turned to me and spoke without making eye contact. "The alpha heir asks his mate to eat and keep herself healthy."
I frowned but sat up on the bed. The man didn't speak again but didn't move to leave the room either. It took me a full minute to realize what was going on and say, "You can go." He nodded his head deeply and left. He was giving me the deference due the alpha heir's mate, at least according to Fury Pack. It was the same way I had been acting for years. I wondered if it chafed him as much as it did me.
Having snapped out of the maze of unanswerable questions in my head, I stood up and took in my surroundings. The room was quite comfortable. It had a queen-sized bed with a soft comforter and many pillows on it. A wooden desk and chair were placed against one wall. An upholstered armchair sat under a large window. A second identical window was placed further down that outside wall. There were two other doors besides the one that led to the hall. I opened the first and found an empty closet. The second led to a bathroom. As prisons went, it was luxurious.
I took off my jacket to get more comfortable since the room was warm enough. I used the bathroom, happy to find a lock on the door, not that it would keep a determined were out. It was merely meant to stop someone from accidentally walking in while thinking the bathroom was unoccupied. That done, I sat down at the desk and looked at the food.
There was a steak, steamed broccoli, and mashed potatoes. It looked appetizing. A carafe of water and a glass sat next to the plate. I concentrated for a moment, allowing a partial change to come over me, and took a deep smell of the food. My heightened senses in this state told me there was nothing foreign in the food like a drug, so I shifted back and ate. It made no sense to weaken myself with hunger.
Shortly after I was done eating, the door opened. I looked over and watched as Alpha Fisher entered the room and closed the door behind him. He looked at me without speaking for a good minute. I just stared back at him, refusing to bow my head in submission again.
"Colton told me you were only pretending to be submissive." A little smile came to his face. "You are a good actress."
"I had to be to survive here."
He nodded. "That will come in handy as an alpha's mate."
I frowned. "I will never be your son's mate. He isn't my mate. I don't know how else to explain this. I don't really understand how it is possible, but it is a fact."
It shocked me that Alpha Fisher nodded and said, "I understand."
Confused wasn't an adequate term for what I felt. "Huh?"
"I believe you, but he doesn't have to be your fated mate in order for you to accept and mate with him."
Alpha Fisher's calm tone further confused me. "What are you talking about?"
He sat down on the end of the bed and looked at me calmly. I swiveled my body in the chair to look at him more comfortably before he said, "Colton's mother wasn't my fated mate."
What the hell?
I just looked at him with wide eyes and waited.
"Colton doesn't know this, and even if you told him, he wouldn't believe you. He'd think I made it up trying to get you to accept him." He paused again but, when I didn't speak, continued. "You know that we don't have sex before we find our mates. The act of mating, sex, makes the other person your mate. I was a hormonal teenager and believed I could be above the law. I had sex with Colton's mother. She was a human. A low level of the mate connection was formed on my side. I could feel her pain, but it was very weak. I decided to turn her."
