I dialed my parents' number. It was answered on the first ring, but this time it was my father's voice on the line. "Hello?"
I was prepared to hear my mother's voice, but not my father's. One second I was smiling, and the next tears flooded my eyes. "Dad."
"Daughter." I could hear the smile in his voice.
A memory flashed in my mind, returning me to my eight-year-old self for a moment.
"Dad, why do you always call me Daughter?"
"Because that's what I called you for many years before you were born."
"Why were you talking to me before I was born?"
"Because I missed you very very much when you weren't here."
"I love you, Dad."
"I love you more, Daughter."
"Hey, baby sister."
Tanner's voice made my bones ache. My crying went from silent to sobbing. Cade's t-shirt lay across the log at my side. I picked it up, handed Cade the phone to hold at my ear, and cleaned myself up.
"Dad, that's not my sister. My sister never cries. This must be some imposter."
A defensive spark stopped my tears. "Shut up. I just found my mate, and my emotions are whacked out. It's driving me nuts."
"Now that's my sister."
Mom said, "We're all here, Jess. I ran and got them after we hung up. I told them everything."
Dad said, "Is everything worked out? Are you coming here?"
I took the phone back from Cade. "Yes, we should arrive in three days."
Dad asked, "Sunday?"
I looked at Fidoro and got a nod. "Yes, Sunday."
Tanner said, "It'll be Daughterday this week."
We all let out the same combination of groan and laugh, making Cade and Fidoro grin.
Mom said, "We're looking forward to Daughterday."
Dad said, "And meeting your mate!"
Tanner said, "Prepare yourself to be hugged for hours. You know, go to the bathroom before."
I laughed. "I'll do that."
Dad said, "Good."
Mom said, "Stay safe!"
After everyone said, "I love you," to everyone, I hung up the phone and handed it back to Fidoro. I felt drained and plugged myself back into the charger, also known as Cade's chest. He tightened his arms around me and kissed the top of my head.
I rested with my eyes closed, listening to Cade's heartbeat. My internal clock alerted me that more than a few minutes had passed. I opened my eyes to see the sunlight fading around us and no alpha. I picked my head up, looked around, and saw that Cade and I were completely alone.
