My muscles flexed to move my body where it needed to be, on Cade, but someone grabbed me from behind around my shoulders and turned me to the left. A shock went through my system, lightening flashing under my skin. It hurt, feeling like a punishment.

Cade!

I looked back to my right, for Cade, but saw Ratchet had turned my mate away from me. It felt immensely wrong. Why had Ratchet done it?

Just like—

I turned to the left and saw Tank. His hands were still on my shoulders, keeping me in place with a firm grip. "Let's go to the trees, Jessica. The moon is about to rise above them. You need to be careful not to look at Cade now. Understand?"

Oh yeah.

The reasons I couldn't allow my body and instincts what they demanded rushed back into my head. "Right. Yes. I understand."

"I'm going to put you next to him." Tank moved two steps closer to Cade. "You can hold his hand. Just don't look at him. We'll surround you. Everything will be okay. Reach out your left hand."

I fought to keep my eyes forward and lifted my hand at my side. My skin met Cade's, and an electric shock passed between us. We entwined our hands in an instant and gripped each other tight. The planet would crack and splinter off in a million directions if we lost contact.

The pressure of Tank's hands indicated I should walk. I made it ten steps before my head turned without my permission. Ratchet already held Cade's head, preventing him from looking at me. Disappointment hit.

Tank's hands moved to my head and pointed it forward again. "If neither of you can stop yourselves, I'm going to blindfold you!"

His threatening tone made me smile; a thought made it grow. "It's all in the eyes."

Ratchet said, "You can't look in the eyes right now, alpha's orders."

"No. I mean, that's what causes the bond, it's all in the eyes. Cade and I weren't physically mating last night, but there was a moment. We were looking into each other's eyes. All I had to do was accept it, let myself have it, and we would have bonded."

Tank sounded skeptical. "Without physically mating?"

"Yes! I know it. I felt it."

Cade said, "It's true. I felt it too, and I was already allowing it."

Tank said, "Shit."

"It's okay. She looked away. It didn't happen."

"But if you two look at each other tonight, we're screwed."

Cade and I both said, "We won't."

"But the moon is already taking away your control."

Cade said, "I think we need a distraction. As soon as we're running, it will be okay."

"You sure? You said Fisher and Colton might kill a lot of people or expose us if Colton felt Jessica bond with another were. That's serious."

Cade squeezed my hand even tighter. "I'm sure."

I returned the gesture. "Me too."

Ratchet spoke fast. "Better be. Here's the moon."
