"GEIGER MARTIN IS MY father. Isn't that funnier than surprising?" I said for the hundredth time, as I took a huge bite of my salad. The school cafeteria was bustling with noise and starving football players. Like all the other times I stated it, Ezra sat stoically on a chair opposite to mine and watched me tightlipped. A slight frown formed between his thick dark eyebrows.

"And Hailey, she was absolutely clueless that the father of her first child had been murdered. She says that she had gone to Scotland with dad by then. I find the whole thing extremely hilarious. I mean it's all coincidental," I snickered, and choked hoarsely on a forkful of veggies. Very unladylike! Ezra's frown deepened.

"What? Don't you find it funny that the murdered person we were investigating on turned out be my deadbeat father," I asked, raising my eyebrows. Ezra stared at me, his golden pupils barely touched his bottom eyelids and the bare whiteness of his eyeballs contrasted well with his caramel skin.

"No," He blurted, standing abruptly to leave. I watched him rather astonished, before following him out of the cafeteria, dumping my half eaten salad in the trash can. Normally, I hated wasting food but at the time I was way too concerned about Ezra than to think about wasting food.

"Wait! What's wrong with you?" I called out to him, as I lugged him by his arm. He turned his head to me, something inexplicably dark lingered in his golden orbs.

"No. It isn't funny. It's not funny that you are hurting so much inside and yet you are smiling and making jokes out of it," He said. It crumpled me. My sadness overwhelmed me and tears threatened to fall. But instead of an emotional breakdown, I felt furious.

"So what am I supposed to do. Cry? I am tired of doing it," I snapped. " I am tired of everything. I am so tired that I am happy to welcome death any moment now." I sighed.

"I can see that you are exhausted. Your skin has turned really pale and it looks as if you aren't getting much sleep," He said, his voice softened. Silence reigned between us.

"Ezra. Should I just give up and let Jane take my life?" I asked him, tears voluntarily filled up my eyes. When did I become such a crybaby? He bit his lip out of frustration so hardly that I could see the blood seep out from underneath. After the nightmare I had, my bloodlust had somehow vanished along with the blackness of my arms. He turned to leave. I followed him, calling after him.

"I am leaving," He said.

"Where to? Classes are about to start," I said, panicking. He stopped abruptly and turned to face me. He came closer.

"James, do you know what made me so gravitated towards you. It was your strength, your unrivalled self confidence and that serene, unapproachable aura that you created about yourself. I felt so intrigued by you," He said softly, looking into my green eyes. I turned away feeling my ears burn.

"But now on seeing you at the verge of losing everything. Your hopes. Your confidence. Your life. Everything. And how tired and frail you look now. It hurts me to see you like this, James," He said, his voice breaking. My lips quivered.

"But you are extraordinary, James. Because no normal person can withstand this much pain and fear with the sort of courage you have shown. You didn't breakdown or give up. You dealt with all your troubles and protected your sister with a lot of admirable confidence," He said as he stepped more closer and took my face in his large hands. I gasped at his action, feeling the heat rush to my face.

"You know what? Allison James, you are like a magnet. I am so attracted to you," He whispered seductively in my ear. His voice was so low and dangerous that it send shivers of pleasure scuttling over my spine and weakened my legs. Like a magnet? Is he even kidding me? That's sort of lame. Nevertheless, I blushed. Suddenly, he dropped his hands from my face.

"And that's why I am leaving. I am going to find some way to exorcise Jane. There might be some way out there. Don't lose hopes, James. Stay strong! I will come back tonight to your house and vanish her from your life forever," He declared. I stared at him, admiring the quality of his voice and the strength, his promise had given me.

"But Ezra-" I said meekly but he was already out of the building after giving me a casual wave of goodbye. I sighed, selfishly hoping that he would be successful in his mission and exorcise Jane. But at the same time I wanted him to be safe. Until then I had no idea of how much he meant to me. I restrained myself from telling him-

That he was like the magnet and I was attracted to him too.

*************

Few minutes after Ezra had slipped out from school, like a snake slithering out from it's hole, I made my way out of the building. Unlike Ezra who literally announced to the whole world that he was leaving and never got caught, me, who was crawling on the ground and moved with the grace of a feather got caught.

"Allison. Nice to meet you again," Old Mrs Hyacinth George snapped sarcastically as she appeared before me. She beamed at me displaying her yellowing teeth.

"You too," I smiled rather nervously. She stepped closer to me. Her short cropped hair flipped at the edges as she made each step and it reminded me vaguely of wriggling slimy worms.

"Looks like you are up to some trouble," She muttered. I can see her hatred towards me shining in her eyes. I gasped before turning to leave. A huge hand weighed on my shoulder. She was a hall monitor for god's sake. Why was she monitoring the grounds?

"Where do you think you are going?" She asked in her rough manly voice. I sighed.

"To the principal's office," I said, losing hope.

"Damn, right. Smart girl, aren't ya?" She smiled smugly. No! I can't go with her. I have to go to Geiger Martin's house and do some searching. If Jane was his wife, then there ought to be some clue in that house. I have to help Ezra. If he doesn't find a way to exorcise Jane without finding the reason.

"I am so sorry Mrs George. I am extremely sorry," I said as I placed my foot on her shin and then settled my hands on her burly shoulders and pushed her down with all my might. Hyacinth crashed to the floor in a loud slump and with a loud yelp.

I didn't turn back. I didn't concentrate on the long string of curses that was thrown at me by the fallen hall monitor. Neither did I think about the trouble I would get in for my rather rash action nor did I calculate the years I would be grounded for. My best guess is forever. I didn't think about anything except the image of my destination. A new kind of energy was pumped through my veins. I felt powerful.

"I hope you will stop bullying people after this," I said as I was leaving. Hyacinth fumbled for her phone in her pocket. But it was too late.

I was already out of school.
