Ch. 11

Katie's POV

I was sitting at lunch, listening to all my friends talk about homecoming. Leah had been asked by Pearson Rogers, a guy in her chemistry class. What a coincidence. He had someone draw a chalk outline around him and held a rose in both his hands. When Leah was led to where he lay, he looked at her and said," I'm dying to go to homecoming with you." How original.

Brooke is going with Gayle Bennett who works with her at Starbucks. I'll let you in on a little secret, Gayle has had a crush on Brooke for forever but she never noticed. Anyways, Drew is taking Alicia since the girl he wanted to go with said no and Alicia had no one to go with. And Alex says that homecoming is lame and he's only coming to hang out with us (and for the food) so he doesn't want to pay for someone else's ticket. Then there's me. I haven't been asked by anybody yet! I thought Mark was going to ask me but he hasn't. Maybe he's still scared about the whole Luke thing.

While I was contemplating these things, the lights in the cafeteria grew dim. The T.V. in the lunchroom turned on and someone started playing a video. Mark appeared on the screen in a tuxedo, sitting on a bench and looking lonely. One his buddies came up to him and asked, "Hey, dude. Why are you so sad?"

"Well," he replied, "I really wanted to ask this amazing girl to homecoming but I think she'll say 'no'." He sighed and hung his head. My heart sunk because he didn't ask me and he was going to ask some other girl.

"You never know what she's gonna say if you never ask." His friend encourages. Mark stands up and smiles.

"Yeah. You're right." They run around for a little while, getting his hair done and going to the store to get a dozen red roses. The next thing I know is that he's standing in front of the lunchroom doors about to open them when the video cuts off. Mark comes running through the doors wearing a tux and holding a dozen red roses. He glanced around for a minute before he started walking towards a table. Next thing I know, he's in front on one knee holding the roses out. "Katie Elizabeth Smith, will you do the honor of being my date to homecoming this year?" I'm almost speechless by what just happened.

I barely squeak out, "Yes!" Mark jumps up and gives me a hug. Alicia, Brooke and Leah squeal with joy. After our hug is finished, Drew and Alex give Mark a pat on the back and a 'good job' but I barely noticed any of this. I was too happy to register what just happened. I didn't see my friends trying to talk to me or Drew and Alex give me a hug. I didn't see Jack storm out of the lunchroom with a look of disgust on his face. All I could see was Mark Evans smiling at me. I'm so happy right now, nothing could ever ruin this.

But life has a weird way of crushing happiness.
