Ch. 12 continued
Katie POV
This had to be the best day of my life. I got to slow dance with Mark
He, the guy of my dreams, just asked me out. ME! Of all people, he chose me. There is no way that this day can get any better.
Mark and I decided to take a break from the dance floor. "I'm gonna go get some water. Do you want anything?" He asked as we walked off the dance floor.
"Nope, I'm good. "
I walked towards Drew ,who was being pestered by Martha Clayton, the class flirt. She constantly put her hands on his arm and he, being the polite guy he is, gently took them off and said he wasn't interested. She huffed and walked away with a dramatic flip of her hair. I walked up to Drew, laughing slightly at Martha's apparent annoyance of being rejected.
"What did she want?" I questioned, nodding my head her way.
Drew rolled his eyes in disgust, "What she always wants, a guy on her arm." I rolled my eyes. She already had a date to homecoming tonight , yet she tries to get together with Drew. Talk about shallow. Good thing Drew is a good guy and also a sensible one. He'd never fall for her ridiculous flirting.
"So, Kay, how's your night been with Mark so far? You know since he's your dream boy." Nudging my arm slightly and wiggling his eyebrows. I laughed at how goofy he was.
Answering calmly, "Oh, it's been pretty great. We slowed danced and while we were dancing he told me he's had a crush on me for a while but had been too scared to tell me." In my mind, I replayed the moment, "Then the craziest thing happened and you'll never believe it." I paused, making Drew's anticipation grow.
"Well... What happened?" I can tell he's getting impatient, which made me smile.
"Mark asked me out!" I exclaimed. A broad smile was plastered on my face.
Drew gave me a big hug. "That's great, Kay!" Releasing the hug, he looks me sternly in the eyes, "Be careful. I don't want him to break your heart ,and if he does, I'll kill him."
"Relax, Drew. I already have an overprotective brother. I do not need another one. " In reality, Drew really was like another brother to me. He looked out for me and made me laugh all the time. On some occasions, people come up to us and ask if we're dating because we are that close. We simply laugh and tell them that we're just friends. Correction we are family and I wouldn't want it any other way.
Looking around, I noticed Alicia was nowhere to be seen. "Hey, Drew?" I questioned him ,while tugging on his shirt. His eyes had shifted to the food, which he was probably about to consume before I diverted his attention.
"Yeah, Kay." His focus completely on me now.
"What happened to Alicia? I don't see her anywhere. " Getting on my tippy toes and using Drew as support, I searched for her trying to see if I missed her before.
"Oh, she went to the bathroom. It's outside in the lobby area. She'll be back soon I'm sure." His gaze once again was fixated on the food. Before I could say anything else, Mark walked up with a drink in his hands.
"Are you ready to get back on the dance floor? " Mark asked with a beautiful angel smile.
It took me a few seconds to respond but when I finally snapped out of it I replied, "I'm going to go look for Alicia. How about you go dance and I'll catch up with you later."
"Okay, " He said walking towards the dance floor. I starred after him for a minute and then headed towards the bathrooms. When I got there, I saw Alicia fixing her makeup.
"Hey, Alicia, how's homecoming been?"
"Oh, it's been awesome." She frowned a little, "Sadly, I haven't been able to get Drew on the dance floor. He's so stubborn. How do you deal with him?"
"Umm..." I thought for a moment, "You could bribe him with food. He REALLY loves food." I put extra emphasis on really. I don't think there's a time where he and I have hung out and he hasn't stuffed his face with food. It's a good thing he plays soccer or else he'd be a little chunky. Little is putting it nicely.
"So, if I asked him to dance with me in exchange for making his lunch for a week, do you think he would do it? " She jumbled out eyes bright with excitement.
I thought about it and then simple answered, "I'm sure that's a deal he won't refuse. "
"Yay!" She jumped up and down, "I finally get to dance with somebody!" I laughed as I followed her out of the bathroom. We walked back into the party room and went over to Drew. Alicia was explaining her deal to him while he was eating a sandwich.
I was about to mention that she could make him her delicious sugar cookies when I noticed Mark near the punch bowl with Martha. She was giggling and twirling her hair around her finger while Mark chuckled. I snuck closer to listen in on their conversation. (Don't follow my example! Eavesdropping is wrong. ) Martha was on her top game.
"Mark, do you lift weights every day because your muscles look so strong. " She giggled and batted her eyelashes. Ugh, this girl makes me sick.
"Um, yeah almost every day." He smiles. I can tell Martha is enjoying every second of this.
"Where's, Katie? Wasn't she your date for tonight?" She asked as she pretended to look for me.
"Oh, she just went to the bathroom. She'll be back soon." He was getting a little nervous.
"So tell me the truth ,Mark. Why did you really ask her out?" Pausing for a second to fix her hair, she continued, "You are way out of her league. Are you trying to boost her self esteem or something?"
My blood was boiling! How dare she say that! I waited patiently as Mark retorted his reply. "No, I'm not trying to boost her self esteem. I really do like her. " Yes! Good job Mark.
"Fine," She huffed.
"I better go look for, Katie."
Mark started to walk away when Martha exclaimed, "Ow! My eye, there's something in my eye! Ow, ow, ow!" She covered her eye with he hand as she acted, in my opinion, like a child.
No matter how stupid her trick was, it worked. Mark came rushing back to her side, trying to calm her down, "Now let me see. Open your eye." She opened her eye and before either Mark or I knew what was happenning, Martha pulled his face down and put her lips to his.
I gasped. Shock plastered Mark's face but he was not shocked enough to push Martha off him. The kiss continued for a good twenty seconds before realization came and Mark separated his and Martha's lips but by that time I had already left.
I wasn't crying or boiling with anger. I was empty. I didn't know whether to feel sad, angry or regretful that I thought Mark actually liked me. If he truly liked me, he would have pushed her away as soon as she put her lips on his. But he didn't.
I walked outside the building and sat on a bench. Trying to clear my head, I closed my eyes and just sat there replaying the incident. Goose bumps covered my arms as I shivered in the chill evening air. I could've gone back inside ,but there was no way I could face anyone right now ,so I just sat there. A night ,that was once the best of my life, had turned into a complete and total disaster.
